33 SMU student-athletes earn MIAC honor

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University boasted 33 student-athletes who earned Academic All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognition for the 2022 fall academic semester.
 
On Wednesday, the MIAC announced its Academic All-Conference honorees for the 2022-23 fall semester, which included a record 781 student-athletes. The previous fall-sport high was 779, set in the 2021-22 academic year.
 
In order to qualify for Academic All-MIAC status, student-athletes must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors by academic standards with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students must also have completed one full-time academic year at their current institution prior to becoming eligible for the honor.
 
To meet the athletic qualifications, an individual must be a member of an MIAC-sponsored varsity sports team, be academically and athletically eligible, have utilized a season of participation per NCAA and MIAC definitions, and have remained on the sports roster through the conclusion of the sports season in order to be eligible for Academic All-Conference honors.

The Cardinal volleyball and men's soccer teams led all Saint Mary's fall sports teams, each landing 11 members of the Academic All-MIAC squad.
 
Elise Amerongen (Lake Elmo, Minn.), Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.), Kailee Magaard (Mankato, Minn.), Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.), Haylee Mullenbach (Owatonna, Minn.), Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.), Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.), Jessica Schneider (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), Bella Stein (Prior Lake, Minn.), Rachel Szepieniec (Eau Claire, Wis.), and Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) represented the SMU volleyball team, while Aidan Adamek (Helena, Mont.), Marshall Briggs (Phoenix, Ariz.), Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.), Brandon Fagiolo (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Zack Frantzen (Urbandale, Iowa), Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.), Alex Keeler (Antioch, Ill.), Kristian Lindanger (Tysvaervaag, Norway), Kyle Palmberg (Holmen, Wis.), Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.), and Jake Wing (Verona, Wis.) were named from the Cardinal men's soccer team.
 
The Cardinal women's soccer team boasted eight academic all-conference members — Ally Barlow (Appleton, Wis.), Leah Lebrun (Antioch, Ill.), Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.), Paige Morris (Chandler, Ariz.), Alexis Nguyen (West Covina, Calif.), Emily Schaffer (Hampton, Minn.), Maya Wachter (Dubuque, Iowa), and Abbi Westhoff (Marion, Iowa — with Gabe Bickerstaff (Rollingstone, Minn.) and Isaiah Brindamour (Hinckley, Minn.) of the men's cross country team, and Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.), Emily Kern (Buffalo, Minn.), and Amanda Tuvey (West St. Paul, Minn.) of the women's cross country team rounding out the Saint Mary's honorees.
