SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their second conference meeting St. Catherine on Wednesday sitting at 5-11 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) scored a team-high 17 points and Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) collected a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, but it was not enough, as Concordia held off a late SMU charge in dealing the Cardinals a 67-61 conference setback last Saturday at the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• FINALLY HOME: After playing three consecutive home games, Wednesday’s game at St. Catherine is the first of back-to-back road contests. … SMU is 3-5 in its eight home games this season, while sporting a 2-6 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: Nine of the Cardinals’ last 10 contests have been decided by 10 points or less — including all three games last week. Those nine nail-biting contests include wins over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (60-53) and Macalester (73-65), and losses to UW-Stevens Point (81-79 OT), Penn State Behrend (71-65), Hamline (69-60), Saint Benedict (65-58), Bethel (60-59), Augsburg (50-44), and Concordia (69-61).
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Paulson heads into Wednesday’s matchup against St. Catherine leading the team in scoring with a 15.6 ppg average, while Goettelman is also averaging in double figures at 11.3 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in 14 of SMU’s 16 games this season. … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led or shared the team lead in scoring in 13 of their 16 contests, with Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.), Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.), and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) each leading the team in scoring once.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points seven times this season. Paulson owns four games or 20 or more points, while Goettelman has scored 20 or more points twice and Streveler has eclipsed the 20-point mark once. … Paulson has scored 20+ points 21 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times and Streveler once.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting sixth all-time with 1,403 career points. Next up on the list — Ashley Luehmann ’06, who is fifth at 1,438.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Wednesday’s game vs. St. Catherine with 232 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 665.
• NO REST: Paulson has started every game during her five-year collegiate career — a span of 98 consecutive starts. Her 98 career starts rank fifth all-time. Jessica Thone ’13 holds the school record with 104 straight starts.
• PERFECTION: Paulson drained 22 consecutive free throws over a four-game span, before have the streak broken with a miss on her final FT attempt against Concordia last Saturday. The senior’s streak including a perfect 10-for-10 showing against St. Scholastica on Jan. 14. … Paulson’s 10 made free throws in 10 attempts were a career high and marked the first time an SMU player has gone 10-for-10 or better since Hallie Schmeling was 10-for-10 against St. Catherine on Feb. 13, 2019.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3, and put four players in double figures for the first time this season —Coleman netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Streveler with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• CAREER HIGHS: Streveler became the fifth Cardinal player to recorded a career-high game of 10 or more points with her 22-point effort against Hamline on Jan. 4. Goettelman (23 points), Coleman (17), Cruze (14), and Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis. / 10) have also posted career-best games this season.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 126 rebounds (7.9 rpg), followed by Cruze (92, 5.8 rpg), Goettelman (73, 4.6 rpg), and Streveler (65, 413 rpg). … Paulson hauled in a career-high 15 rebounds against Macalester on Jan. 17. It was the highest single-game performance since Rachel Kedl collected 16 boards against Hamline on Jan. 11, 2020. … SMU has had a player record 10 rebounds in a game six times — Cruze and Paulson have each achieved the feat three times.
• DOUBLING UP: Paulson has recorded three double-doubles in SMU’s last four games. She picked up her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds against St. Scholastica on Jan. 14, added her second with 23 points and a career-best 15 boards against Macalester on Jan. 17, and delivered a 14-point, 12-rebound effort against Concordia last Saturday. Paulson now owns eight double-doubles in her collegiate career. … Cruze collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The junior matched that 11-point, 10-rebound effort against MIT on Dec. 30 for double-double No. 2. … The 10 rebounds are a career-high for Cruze.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3. SMU’s 12 3-pointers against the Knights were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson leads the team with 32 3-pointers, followed by Streveler with 25 and Goettelman with 21. As a team, SMU has drained 101 treys — with Paulson, Streveler, and Goettelman accounting for 78 of them.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 50 assists, 13 up on Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 21 helpers. The trio have combined for 107 of SMU’s 171 assists through 16 games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Music City Classic on Dec. 29-30 marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 37.1 percent from the field (340-for-916), with 101 3-pointers, and are 207-for-291 (71.1 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 61.8 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 66.4 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
ST. CATHERINE WILDCATS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: St. Catherine enters Wednesday’s mid-week showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 9-6 overall, including an 8-5 mark in 13 conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Bree Glynn scored 20 points and added a career-high 17 rebounds in leading the Wildcats to a dominating, 82-53 win over St. Scholastica last Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: Wednesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the Wildcats’ third straight home game — and the third of six consecutive games played in St. Paul, Minn. After Wednesday, SCU plays at Hamline and at Macalester, before returning home for games against Carleton and Concordia.
• BACK ON TRACK: After back-to-back losses to Gustavus and Saint Benedict — in which SCU was held to 31 and 38 points, respectively — the Wildcats got back on the winning track with an 83-point outburst in routing St. Scholastica 82-53 last Saturday.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Sam Orth heads into Wednesday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s leading the Wildcats in scoring with an 11.4 ppg average. Glynn is second on the team, averaging 8.0 ppg, followed by Greta Schimnowski at 7.0 ppg and Karis Zezza at 6.5 ppg. … The Wildcats have had a player score 20 or more points in a game three times this season. Orth netted 24 vs. UW-Superior on Dec. 30 and added a season-high 27 vs. Finlandia the following day, while Glynn delivered 20 points against St. Scholastica last Saturday. … SCU has had five different players lead them in scoring through 15 games — led by Orth, who has led the team in scoring six times.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Along with her 11.4 ppg scoring average, Orth also leads the team in rebounds with 97 (6.9 rpg). Orth is one of four Wildcats who have hauled in 40 or more boards, being joined by Glynn (85), Emme Golembieswski (76, 5.4 rpg), and Kaylee Miron (44, 3.1 rpg). … Glynn’s 17 rebounds against St. Scholastica were a career-high. …
• DOUBLING UP: Orth and Glynn have accounted for St. Catherine’s two double-doubles this season — Orth posted a 27-point, 10-rebound effort against Finlandia on Dec. 31, while Glynn delivered 20 points and 17 boards against St. Scholastica last Saturday.
• FROM DOWNTOWN: St. Catherine has tossed in 63 3-pointers in 15 games, led by Schimnowski, who has accounted for 20 of those 63 treys. Sydney Elliott is second on the team with 11 3-pointers, followed by Rachel Randelman with nine.
• LENDING A HAND: The Wildcats boast six players with 10 or more assists this season, led by Miron with 30. Glynn has added 20 helpers, with Zezza (18), Orth (14), Randleman (12), and Schimnowski (11) also reaching double figures.
• STEALING THE SHOW: Glynn has collected a team-leading 23 steals, three more than Orth, and seven up on Miron.
• WORKING (DOUBLE) OVERTIME: St. Catherine has played one overtime game this season, falling to Finlandia 91-82 in 2 OTs on Dec. 31.
• BY THE NUMBERS: St. Catherine is shooting 36.6 percent from the field (296-for-809), with 64 3-pointers, and are 151-for-215 (70.2 %) from the free throw line. … The Wildcats are averaging 57.6 ppg, while their opponents are scoring at a 57.2 ppg clip. … St. Catherine has outscored its opponents in three of the four quarters — 178-171 in the first, 210-198 in the second, and 214-196 in the fourth.
