SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:

• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference matchup against Bethel on Friday sitting at 8-8-1 overall, and 4-4-0 in conference play.

• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals have been off since Jan. 13-14, when they battled St. Olaf to a split in their two-game conference series. SMU got goals from seven different players — including a pair of goals from Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) — in routing d St. Olaf 8-2 in Northfield, Minn., on Jan. 13, before surrendering five third-period goals in falling to the Oles 5-2 at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.

• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday’s game at Bethel is the fifth road game in the last six contests for the Cardinals — the lone exception, SMU’s 5-2 loss to St. Olaf on Jan. 14. The Cardinals, who played nine of their first 13 games on their home ice, are 4-5-1 at home, while going 4-3-0 away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.

• OFFENSE IN SYNC: The Cardinals have netted 38 goals in their last nine games — including back-to-back four-goal efforts against Gustavus on Dec. 3-4, five-goal showings vs. MSOE on Dec. 10 and Northland on Jan. 6, a seven-goal performance against Lawrence on Jan. 3, and a season-high eight-game outburst in beating St. Olaf 8-2 on Jan. 13.

• LONG TIME COMING: The Cardinals’ season-high eight goals in their 8-2 win over St. Olaf on Jan. 13 were the most in a game since SMU netted eight against Hamline on Feb. 23, 2014.

• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia), who has scored five goals in SMU’s last five games — including one of SMU’s eight tallies on Jan. 13 against St. Olaf — owns the team lead in goals with seven, one more than Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa) and two in front of Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.). Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.), and Thomas Magnavite (Chicago, Ill.) have scored four goals, followed by Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.) and Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.) with three each. … SMU has gotten goals from 18 different players. 

• TOSSING THE HAT: Sheberov netted his first collegiate hat trick against Lawrence on Jan. 2. He is the first Cardinal player to score three goals in a game since Andrew Froese (Traverse City, Mich.) achieved the feat against Gustavus on Feb. 23, 2021.

• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s has had a player score two or more goals in a game five times this season. Along with Lindauer’s two-game effort against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 and Sheberov’s three-goal night against Lawrence on Jan. 2, Winter scored twice against Lake Forest on Oct. 28; Tharaldson recorded his first collegiate two-goal game against Gustavus on Dec. 3; and Tushie collected his first two-goal game as a Cardinal against MSOE on Dec. 10.

• MULTIPLE POINTS: Lindauer collected a pair of assists to go along with his two goal en route to his first collegiate four-point night against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, while Sheberov and Campion have each recorded career-high three-point games — Sheberov’s coming on three goals against Lawrence on Jan. 2, while Campion picked up a pair of assists to go with his first-period goal against Gustavus on Dec. 2. … Winter collected helpers on three of SMU’s four goals vs. the Gusties on Dec. 2 for his first career three-assist game — and third career three-point night.

• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Saint Mary’s has five players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season. Blake Campbell (Keller, Texas) tallied his first career goal vs. St. Olaf on Friday; Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.) tallied his first in a Cardinal jersey last Friday vs. Gustavus; Brendan Westbrook (Pine City, Minn.) scored his first SMU goal vs. UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 11; Tushie netted his first SMU goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29; and Campion delivered his first career goal vs. Hamline on Nov. 5.

• LENDING A HAND: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) has racked up a team-leading 10 assists, two more than Poellinger and three in front of Lindauer. Young, Tushie, Winter and Magnavite are tied fourth on the team with six assists, with Campion sitting with five helpers. 

• POINT PRODUCERS: Saint Mary’s boasts seven players who have reached double-digits in points this season — Tharaldson leads the way with 12 points, followed by Poellinger (11), Young (10), Tushie (10), Magnavite (10), Sheberov (10), and Winter (10). Sheberov and Lindauer are one point away from joining the double-digit club. … Saint Mary’s has gotten at least one point from 22 different players — including goalkeeper Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.).

• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.

• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies this season. Sankner has stopped 299 of the 331 shots he’s faced in 11 appearances en route to a 3.10 GAA and a .903 save percentage, while A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in six games — including four starts — and owns a 3.88 GAA and .896 save %. Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 5.34 GAA, .831 save % and has made 69 saves in his three starts. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18, while Ruskowski stopped a career-best 42 shots against St. Olaf on Friday and Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.

• FROM DEFENSE TO OFFENSE: Sankner collected his first collegiate assist, getting the lone helper on Sheberov’s first goal in the second period SMU’s 6-3 win over Lawrence on Jan. 2. … Sankner’s assist is the first by a Cardinal goalie since Nick Nash picked up an assist against Gustavus on Oct. 26, 2018.

• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals have played two overtime games this season, battling Lake Forest to a 5-5 draw on Oct. 28, while beating Northland 5-4 Friday night. Friday’s OT game was SMU’s fifth over the last two seasons.

• STREAKING: The Cardinals had their season-high six-game win streak snapped with their 4-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 7. After opening the season 1-6-1, SMU had rattled off wins over Lawrence (3-1), Gustavus (4-1 & 4-3), MSOE (5-3), Lawrence (6-3), and Northland (5-4 OT). … Saint Mary’s six-game win streak was its longest since winning six in a row during the 2005-06 season.

• CLEAN SHEET: Saint Mary’s was not whistled for a penalty in its 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. All told, there were just two penalties called in the nonconference contest, both against the Vikings.

• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s has scored first in seven of its last nine games, and is sitting at 5-3-0 when netting the game’s first goal, while going 3-5-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.

• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.

• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has scored outscored its opponents 17-14 in the first period, but have been outscored 22-15 in the second and 28-21 in the third. … Saint Mary’s is 12 of 68 on the power play (17.6 %), while killing off 56 of its opponents 72 power-play opportunities (77.8 %). … SMU set season-highs in goals (8), assists (14), and points (22) against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, while its 46 shots on goal against Lawrence on Nov. 22 are also a season high.

BETHEL ROYALS SCOUTING REPORT:

• FOR THE RECORD: The Royals enter their two-game MIAC series against Saint Mary’s, which kicks off Friday in Blaine, Minn., boasting a 9-9-1 overall record, including a 4-5-1 mark in conference play.

• LAST TIME OUT: Bethel dropped both games in its two-game series against Concordia last weekend at the Bethel Arena in Blaine, Minn., falling 3-2 in last Friday’s first game, before dropping a second 3-2 decision — this one in overtime — the following afternoon.

• SLUMPING: Bethel’s back-to-back losses to Concordia last weekend pushed its losing streak to three straight. BU — which is 1-6-0 in its last seven contests — has not won since knocking off then-No. 12 Augsburg 4-1 on Jan. 13. … All three of BU’s losses during their current three-game slide have been by 3-2 counts. 

• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the Royals’ third straight home game — and the fourth in their fourth home contest in their last five games. Bethel sports a 4-4-0 record on its home ice, while sitting at 5-5-1 away from Bethel Arena.

• WORKING OVERTIME: The Royals’ 3-2 loss against Concordia last Saturday was their fourth overtime game of the season. BU is 1-2-1 in those four contests — beating then-No. 15 UW-Eau Claire (4-3), falling to St. Olaf (2-1) and Concordia (3-2), and tying Gustavus (1-1).

• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Jarrett heads into the weekend leading the Royals in goals with nine, two more than Justin Kelley, while Tyler Braccini is sitting third with six. Dylan Giorgio has chipped in five goals, and Spencer Kring, Adam Bricker, and Jack Bayless all own four goals. … Cammarata netted a season-high four goals against Finlandia on Oct. 28.

• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Dane Stoyanoff has dished out a team-leading 12 assists, followed by Kelley with nine, Giorgio with eight, and Cammarata and Braeden Bartoo with seven each. … BU has had a player record two assists in a game 13 times this season — including three times by Stoyanoff and two by Kelley.

• POINT PRODUCTION: BU boasts six players who have amassed 10 or more points this season, led by Cammarata and Kelley with 16 apiece. Giorgio is third with 13, followed by Stoyanoff (12), Braccini (11), and Bartoo (10). … Cammarata scored four goals and added an assist for a season-high five points against Finlandia on Oct. 28.

• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Austin Ryman and Travis Allen have shared the goalkeeping duties this season. Ryman owns a 1.923 goals-against-average and .938 save percentage in 11 games (654:36 minutes), while Allen boasts a 2.12 GAA and .916 save % in eight appearances (481:46). … Ryman has stopped 316 of the 337 shots he’s faced, with Allen chipping in 185 saves. … Ryman made a season-high 51 saves against Lake Forest on Nov. 26.

• BY THE NUMBERS: Bethel has outscored its opponents 59-41 through 19 games, including 26-11 in the first period and 15-11 in the second. BU and its opponents have each netted 17 third-period goals. … BU is 16-for-72 on the power play (22.2 %) and has allowed just five power-play tallies on 67 chances. … The Royals have scored a season-high eight goals twice — beating Finlandia 8-2 on Oct. 28 and 8-1 the following day. BU also posted season highs in assists (16) and points (24) against Finlandia on Oct. 29, while posting a season-best 44 shots on goal against Gustavus on Nov. 19.
