SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their conference matchup against Hamline sitting at 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals split their two games at the Music City Classic last week in Nashville, Tenn., falling to Penn State Behrend 71-65 last Thursday, before rebounding with a 60-53 victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology the following afternoon. Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) led the Cardinals in scoring in both games, netting 23 vs. Penn State Behrend and adding 21 against MIT.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Cardinals are in the midst of playing five of six contests on the road. After its two games in Nashville, Tenn., and Wednesday’s game at Hamline, SMU will host Saint Benedict, before returning to the road for back-to-back contests at Bethel and St. Scholastica. … SMU is 2-2 in its four home games this season, while sporting a 1-4 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• SWEET MUSIC: Paulson put together back-to-back 20+ scoring performances at the Music City Classic last week, while Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) chipped in 10 points against Penn State Behrend and 11 vs. MIT and Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) notched 18 points against MIT.
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Paulson heads into Wednesday’s matchup against Hamline leading the team in scoring with a 15.8 ppg average, while Goettelman is also averaging in double figures at 12.1 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in eight of SMU’s nine games this season. … … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led the team in scoring in eight of their first nine games.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points five times this season — including each of SMU’s last three games. Paulson owns three games or 20 or more points, while Goettelman has eclipsed the 20-point mark twice. … Paulson has scored 20 or more points 20 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting seventh all-time with 1,281 career points. Next up on the list — Kim Gleason ’89, who is sixth with 1,283 and Ashley Luehmann ’06, who is fifth at 1,438.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Wednesday’s game at Hamline with 218 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 626.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3. … SMU put four players in double figures for the first time this season against Carleton on Dec. 3 — Coleman netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• CAREER HIGH: Along with Goettelman’s career-high 23-point effort against UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14, Graysin Hartjes’ (Kaukauna, Wis.) 10-point showing vs. the Pointers was also a career-best. The two are the third and fourth SMU players to post career-high scoring nights of 10 or more points this season, being joined by Allysa Coleman (Matteson, Ill. / 17 points vs. Carleton on Dec. 4) and Cruze (11 points vs. Macalester on Nov. 22 and vs. MIT on Dec. 30).
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 62 rebounds (6.9 rpg), followed by Cruze (53. 5.9 rpg) and Goettelman (43, 4.8 rpg). … Fifty-eight of Paulson’s 62 rebounds through nine games have come on the defensive end.
• DOUBLING UP: Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The junior matched that 11-point, 10-rebound effort against MIT on Dec. 30 for double-double No. 2. … The 11 points and 10 rebounds were both career-highs for Cruze. … Paulson recorded four double-doubles last season and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3. SMU’s 12 3-pointers against the Knights were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson leads the team with 18 3-pointers, seven more than both Goettelman and Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.). … As a team, SMU has drained 56 treys this season.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 30 assists, seven up on Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 15 helpers. The trio have combined for 68 of SMU’s 101 assists through nine games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 37.8 percent from the field (197-for-521), with 56 3-pointers, and are 109-for-149 (72.5 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 62.1 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 70.1 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
HAMLINE PIPERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Hamline enters the 2023 portion of its schedule sitting at an impressive 8-1 overall, including a 5-1 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Pipers have been off since Dec. 17, when they got 34 points from their bench and cruised to a lopsided 79-55 nonconference win over Crown in St. Bonifacius, Minn.
• OFF AND RUNNING: Hamline opened the season winning its first eight games, a run that was snapped by a one-point, 53-52 loss to Saint Benedict on Dec. 10. … The Pipers own a 3-1 record on their home court this season, while unbeaten at 5-0 in games played away from Hutton Arena.
• CRUISE CONTROL: Hamline’s one-point, 53-52 loss to Saint Benedict on Dec. 10 and six-point, 54-48 win over Bethel on Nov. 30 are the only games this season decided by less than 12 points. HU own a 23.5 margin of victory in its other seven contests.
• STINGY D: Hamline has allowed more than 50 points in a game just three times this season, with Crown’s 55-point effort in HU’s 79-55 win on Dec. 17 the most allowed by the Pipers this season.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Pipers boast a balanced offensive attack, boasting six players who are averaging 6.9 ppg or more through nine games. Lydia Lecher leads the way for HU, scoring at a 13.7 ppg clip, followed by Michaela Stamer (8.6 ppg), Tess Hauer (7.8 ppg), Alyssa Williamson (7.7 ppg), Larisa O’Neil (7.0 ppg), and Chan’el Anderson-Manning (6.9 ppg. … Lecher scored a single-game, season-high 23 points against Martin Luther on Nov. 16.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Lecher has hauled in a team-high 49 rebounds (5.4 rpg), with Williamson and Iyanna Wieland sitting second and third with 37 (4.1 rpg) and 30 (3.3 rpg), respectively. … Hamline has had a player haul in 10 or more rebounds twice this season — Wieland recorded 10 boards against St. Scholastica on Nov. 22, and Tess Hauer notched a season-high 13 rebounds against St. Catherine on Nov. 19.
• RAINING IN 3s: Hamline has poured in 66 3-pointers through nine games, with O’Neil, Lecher, and Williamson accounting for 44 of those 66 treys. O’Neil leads the Piper long-range bombers with 19, with Stamer adding 13 and Lecher chipping in 12.
• LENDING A HAND: Hamline has dished out 107 assists in nine games, and boasts four players owning double-digit assist totals — Williamson (22), Anderson-Manning (20), Stamer (14), and Stamer (13).
• BY THE NUMBERS: As a team, Hamline is shooting 40.3 percent from the field (220-for-546) with 66 3-pointers, and is 100 of 158 (63.3 %) from the free throw line. … The Pipers are averaging 67.33 ppg, while holding their opponents to just 48.4 ppg. … HU has outscored its first nine opponents 606-436 — and own scoring advantages of 30 or more points in all four quarters. … Hamline has scored 75 or more points in a game five times — including a season-high 79-point showing in beating Crown 79-55 on Dec. 17.
