SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their conference matchup against Saint Benedict on Saturday sitting at 3-7 overall and 2-5 through the first seven games of the conference schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) scored a career-high 22 points, but the Cardinals could not overcome a 22-9 first-quarter deficit in falling to Hamline 69-60 on Wednesday in St. Paul, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Cardinals are in the midst of playing five of six contests on the road. After its two games in Nashville, Tenn., and Wednesday’s game at Hamline, SMU will host Saint Benedict, before returning to the road for back-to-back contests at Bethel and St. Scholastica next week. … SMU is 2-2 in its four home games this season, while sporting a 1-5 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: Saint Mary’s 69-60 loss to Hamline on Wednesday marked the fourth straight game decided by 10 points or less. Along with the nine-point loss vs. the Pipers, SMU beat Massachusetts Institute of Technology (60-53), and fell to Penn State Behrend (71-65) and UW-Stevens Point (81-79 OT).
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) heads into Saturday’s matchup against Saint Benedict leading the team in scoring with a 15.5 ppg average, while Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures at 11.7 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in nine of SMU’s 10 games this season. … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led the team in scoring in eight of their first 10 games.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points six times this season — including each of SMU’s last four games. Paulson owns three games or 20 or more points, while Goettelman has scored 20 or more points twice and Streveler has eclipsed the 20-point mark once. … Paulson has scored 20 or more points 20 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times and Streveler once.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting sixth all-time with 1,309 career points. Next up on the list — Ashley Luehmann ’06, who is fifth at 1,438.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Saturday’s game vs. Saint Benedict with 219 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 631.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3, and put four players in double figures for the first time this season — Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.) netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Streveler with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• CAREER HIGHS: Streveler became the fifth Cardinal player to recorded a career-high game of 10 or more points with her 22-point effort against Hamline on Wednesday. Goettelman (23 points), Coleman (17), Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn. / 11), and Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis. / 10) have also posted career-best games this season.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 71 rebounds (7.1 rpg), followed by Cruze (58. 5.8 rpg) and Goettelman (48, 4.8 rpg). … Sixty-five of Paulson’s 71 rebounds through 10 games have come on the defensive end.
• DOUBLING UP: Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The junior matched that 11-point, 10-rebound effort against MIT on Dec. 30 for double-double No. 2. … The 11 points and 10 rebounds were both career-highs for Cruze. … Paulson recorded four double-doubles last season and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3. SMU’s 12 3-pointers against the Knights were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson leads the team with 19 3-pointers, followed by Streveler with 16 and Goettelman with 13. As a team, SMU has drained 64 treys — with Paulson, Streveler, and Goettelman accounting for 48 of them.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 31 assists, three up on Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 15 helpers. The trio have combined for 74 of SMU’s 109 assists through 10 games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Music City Classic on Dec.29-30 marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 37.3 percent from the field (217-for-581), with 64 3-pointers, and are 121-for-170 (71.2 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 61.9 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 70.0 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
SAINT BENEDICT BENNIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Benedict heads into its Saturday’s showdown at Saint Mary’s sitting at 8-2 overall, including a 5-2 mark through seven games of the conference schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Catherine outscored the Bennies 23-10 in the fourth quarter, as the Wildcats dealt CSB its second loss in seven conference games, 52-50, Thursday in St. Paul, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s game at Saint Mary’s is the fifth straight road game for the Bennies — including a pair of contests in Hilo, Hawaii. CSB, which follows up Saturday’s matchup with Saint Mary’s with back-to-back home games, is 2-1 in its three home games this season, while sporting a perfect 6-0 mark away from Clare Lynch Hall.
• STREAKING: After opening the season 2-1 — beating UM-Morris (57-52) and St. Olaf (63-59 OT) and falling to Gustavus (64-47) — Saint Benedict rattled off six straight wins, and run that came to an end with Thursday’s 52-50 loss to St. Catherine. Five of CSB’s six wins during its six-game winning streak were all decided by more than 10 points — the lone exception, a one-point, 53-52 win over Hamline on Dec. 10.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Saint Benedict boasts two players who are averaging in double figures in scoring — Carla Meyer (13.7 ppg) and Sophia Jonas (13.4 ppg). … Jonas or Meyer have led or shared the team lead in scoring in nine of their 10 games. … CSB has had a player recorded 20 or more points in a game twice — Meyer netted 20 vs. DePauw on Dec. 19 and Jonas tallied a season-high 22 vs. Augsburg on Dec. 3.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Tori Szathmary leads a balanced CSB team in rebounds with 57 (6.3 rpg). Szathmary is one of seven Bennies with 30 or more rebounds through 10 games, being joined by Meyer (47, 4.7 rpg), Lydia Hay (44, 4.4 rpg), Olivia Boily (42, 4.2 rpg), Hannah Johnson (36, 3.6 rpg), Gabby Martin (33, 3.3 rpg), and Megan Morgan (33, 3.7 rpg). … Johnson and Szathmary have each posted 13-rebound games this season — Szathmary against St. Olaf on Nov. 19 and Johnson vs. Hamline on Dec. 10.
• RAINING IN 3s: Saint Benedict has poured in 70 3-pointers in 10 games, led by Jonas with 34. … Jonas is shooting 43.0 percent from behind the 3-point line, and has delivered five 3-pointers in a game four times this season. … As a team, CSB has recorded 10 or more 3s in a game twice — including a season-high 13 3-pointers against Augsburg on Dec. 3.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with her team-leading 13.7 ppg scoring average, Meyer also leads the team in assists with 44, followed by Martin with 20, and Hay and Johnson with 11 each.
• BLOCK PARTY: The Bennies have recorded 23 blocks this season, led by Hay and Szathmary with six each and Boily with five.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Benedict is shooting 37.4 percent from the field (232-for-621), with 70 3-pointers, and have gone 95 of 145 (65.5 %) from the free throw line. … CSB is averaging 62.9 ppg, while holding their opponents to just 55.1 ppg. … The Bennies have outscored their opponents 629-551 through 10 games — including 159-134 in the first quarter, 168-123 in the second, and 153-132 in the third. CSB has been outscored 159-144 in the fourth frame. … Saint Benedict has scored 70 or more points in a game twice, including a season-high 82-point effort in beating Augsburg 82-68 on Dec. 3.
