SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their weekend conference matches against St. Catherine and St. Scholastica sitting at 10-15 overall, including sporting a 2-4 mark in six conference contests.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals finished 1-2 in its final three nonconference matches of the season last weekend at the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament in Naperville, Ill., sandwiching 3-0 losses to Augustana (Ill.) and North Central (Ill.) around a 3-0 win over Crown.
• GETTING DEFENSIVE: The Cardinals have set a program record for fewest points allowed in a set twice this season. Holding Carleton to just seven second-set points in SMU’s 3-0 win over the Knights on Oct. 4, before breaking that mark by limiting Crown to a meager five first-set points in Saint Mary’s 3-0 victory last Saturday. … Saint Mary’s has now held an opponent under 10 points in a set three times this season, also holding Crown to eight points in the third set last Saturday. … Prior to this season, Saint Mary’s had previously held opponents to eight points in a set three times — beating Finlandia 25-8 on Sept. 2, 2011; and winning 25-8 over both Aurora on Sept. 6, 2013 and Rowan on Oct. 8, 2016.
• SWEEPING UP: Fifteen of Saint Mary’s 24 matches this season have been decided by 3-0 sweeps. The Cardinals are 5-10 in those 15 contests — beating Marian, Lawrence, Luther, Carleton, and Crown, while falling to Elmhurst, UW-Superior, Coe, the University of Dubuque, No. 18 Gustavus, Concordia, Saint Benedict, Nebraska Wesleyan, Augustana (Ill.), and North Central (Ill.).
• GOING THE DISTANCE: With their 3-2 loss to Central-Iowa on Sept. 23, Saint Mary’s has now played six matches that have been extended to a fifth set. The Cardinals are 3-3 in those six contests — beating UMN Morris, Northland, and Buena Vista, while falling to UW-La Crosse, Monmouth, and Central-Iowa.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) heads into this weekend’s matches against St. Catherine and St. Scholastica boasting a team-high 357 kills through 25 matches — tops in the MIAC — and is one of four Cardinals who have eclipsed the 100-kill plateau. Kali Olson (New York Mills, Minn.) is sitting second on the team with 234 kills, followed by Jazzy Davis (La Crosse, Wis.) with 160 and Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) with 158.
• AMONG MIAC & NCAA LEADERS: McNally ranks second in NCAA Division III with 1,076 total attacks and sixth in total kills with 357 this season.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With her ninth kill against Central-Iowa on Sept. 23, McNally became the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. McNally enters this weekend’s matches owning 1,116 kills, leaving her 12th all-time. Next up: Brandi Blattner ’18 with 1,164.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills in 22 of the Cardinals’ 25 matches this season, including four matches of 20 or more kills. … McNally tallied a season-high 24 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2.
• HITTING 10 x 4: The Cardinals had a season-high four players record 10 or more kills in their 3-2 win over Buena Vista on Sept. 19. Bruchert led the way with 18, followed by McNally with 14, Olson with 12, and Davis with 10.
• HITTING 20 x 2: Saint Mary’s boasted two players with 20+ kills in its 3-2 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 2 — McNally led the charge with 24 and Olson chipped in 21.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had four players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Olson recorded a career-best 21 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while Bruchert delivered a career-high 19 kills at Buena Vista on Sept. 19; Davis tallied a career-high 15 vs. Loras on Sept. 15, and Baker recorded 10 vs. Lawrence on Sept. 1.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) has accounted for 842 of the Cardinals’ 962 assists this season, including a single-match career high of 53 against Monmouth on Sept. 16. … VanErp has delivered at least 20 helpers in 23 of SMU’s 25 matches this season, including 30 or more helpers 14 times. … VanErp’s 53 assists against Loras on Sept. 16 marked the second time the junior has delivered 50 of more assists, and were the most since Lillian Braun recorded a 53-assist performance against Coe on Sept. 27, 2019.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally, who led the team with 14 double-doubles in 2022, has recorded 13 kill-dig double-doubles this season, while VanErp has notched the first 10 set-dig double-doubles of her collegiate career.
• DIGGING IT: Lindsey Rossow (Rochester, Minn.) leads the Cardinals in digs with 348, followed by McNally (236), VanErp (209), Devann Clemens (Chatfield, Minn. / 142), and Alison Wu (Woodbury, Minn. / 132). … Rossow posted a career-high 30 digs against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while five other Cardinals — VanErp (18), Clemens (16), Wu (16), Isabella Schei (Stewartville, Minn. / 13), and Ashley Rogers (Onamia, Minn. / 12) — have also recorded single-match career-highs of 10+ digs. … As a team, SMU has put a season-high five players in double figures in digs twice — against Central-Iowa on Sept. 23 and vs. Augsburg on Oct. 6.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 842 assists, VanErp also leads the team with 40 service aces. Rossow (32), Olson (30), Clemens (21), Wu (17), and McNally (17) have also reached double figures in aces this season. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 170 aces through 25 matches. … Saint Mary’s recorded a season-high eight aces against Marian on Sept. 1.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) was named MIAC Specialty Player of the Week on Sept. 6, after racking up racking up 136 assists, two assist-dig double-doubles and eight service aces in SMU’s four Sugar Loaf Classic matches.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: SMU boasts 1054 kills (11.58 kps), 962 assists, 170 aces, 1,390 digs, and 106 blocks in 25 matches. … The Cardinals have recorded 60 or more kills in a match three times — posting 62 against Central-Iowa on Sept. 23, 65 against Monmouth on Sept. 16, and a season-high 66 at Buena Vista on Sept. 19 — while also tallying a season-high 61 assists against both Monmouth and Buena Vista. … SMU is 9-16 in the first set this season, while going 9-16 in the second, 11-14 in the third, 6-4 in the fourth, and 3-3 in the fifth. … SMU has played just four matches decided in four sets — beating Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 9 and St. Olaf on Sept. 30, while falling to Loras on Sept. 15 and Augsburg on Oct. 6.
ST. CATHERINE SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Wildcats head into their weekend road matches against Saint Mary’s and Bethel sitting at 12-6 overall, including 4-2 in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: St. Catherine closed out its nonconference schedule on a winning note last Saturday in St. Paul, Minn., beating UW-Stout 3-1 at Butler Center Gym.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Wildcats closed out a three-match homestand with last Saturday’s 3-1 win against UW-Stout. SCU, which closes out its regular season playing four of its final six matches on the road, boasts a 2-2 home record, while sitting at 10-4 away from Butler Center Gym.
• ON THE ATTACK: SCU heads into the weekend sporting five players who have surpassed the 100-kill mark this season. Tiffany Tellez leads the way for the Wildcats with 158 kills, followed by Maggie Rosen with 147. Lexis Petrick (130), Madison Fagan (119), and Mallory Johnson (104) have also joined the 100-kill club. No other Wildcat has more than 41 kills through 18 matches. … Tellez has recorded 10+ kills seven times this season, one more than Rosen, with Petrick owning four double-figure kill performances. … Tellez leads the team with six kill-dig double-doubles, two more than Petrick.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Lucia Neuman and Ella Rustand have shared the setting duties for the Wildcats this season. Neuman leads the team with 304 helpers, with Rustand adding 279. … Neuman has delivered 10 or more assists in 16 of the Wildcats’ 18 matches, including six matches of 20+ assists. Rustand, meanwhile, has 14 double-digit assist matches. … Neuman delivered a single-match season-high 31 assists against UW-Stout last Saturday. … Neuman owns five assist-dig double-doubles, with Rustand adding one.
• DIGGING IT: Claire Segner boasts a team-leading 292 digs, with Petrick also reaching the 200-dig mark, heading into the weekend with 244. Tellez (195), Neuman (133), and Rustand (102) have also eclipsed 100 digs this season. … Segner owns a team-high five matches of 20 or more digs, while Petrick compiled a single-match season-high 32 digs against Macalester on Oct. 7.
• SERVING UP ACES: St. Catherine has amassed 142 aces in 18 matches, led by Segner wit h29. Rustand is second on the team with 23 aces, followed by Neuman (21), Petrick (18), Tellez (18), Brenna Essig (18), and Emily Bredman (11).
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, SCU has put up 775 kills (11.07 kps), 720 assists (10.29 aps), 142 aces (2.03 aps), 1,193 digs (17.04 dps), and 140 blocks. … The Wildcats have played seven matches decided in three sets, going 3-4. SCU is 4-2 in four-set matches, while sporting a perfect 5-0 mark in contests stretched to a fifth set. … St. Catherine has put together four, two-match winning streaks and a season-high three-match run. On the flip side, SCU has lost back-to-back matches just once. … SCU heads into the weekend having won three of its last four. … St. Catherine has won the first set in 11 of its 12 wins this season — the lone exception, a 3-1 win over Concordia on Oct. 6. SCU has dropped the first set in all six losses.
ST. SCHOLASTICA SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Saints headed into their conference matches against Macalester and Saint Mary’s sitting at 3-17 overall, including 1-4 in five league contests.
• LAST ACTION: UW-Eau Claire made quick work of the Saints in the teams’ nonconference match last Tuesday in Duluth, Minn., picking up a pair of 25-13 wins, before completing the 3-0 sweep with a 25-17 victory in the third set.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saturday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the fourth straight home contest for the Saints, who own a 1-4 record on their home floor. Following Saturday’s match against SMU, CSS will play two of its final three matches on the road, where the Saints have won just twice in 14 contests.
• LIMPING IN: St. Scholastica headed into its two MIAC matches this weekend in the midst of a three-match losing streak, and are just 1-14 in its last 15 contests — the lone win, a 3-0 sweep of Concordia on Oct. 7 that snapped a season-high 11-match losing streak.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ava Swangstue has eclipsed the 100-kill plateau for the Saints, leading the team with 117 kills. Lindsey Baribeau is second, just two kills shy of the century mark, while Delaney Schaeffer and Natalie Yackley have chipped in 85 and 82 kills, respectively. … Swangstue has posted two 10+ kill performances, with Baribeau, Schaeffer, and Yackley all owning one.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Grace Myhre has accounted for 385 of the team’s 586 assists this season, and has recorded 10 or more helpers in 19 of the team’s 20 matches — including eight 20+ assist outings. … Myhre dished out a season-high 34 assists against Saint Benedict on Sept. 30.
• DIGGING IT: CSS boasts four players who have delivered 100 or more digs this season, led by Olivia Bauer with 226. Bryn Ziegler (179), Yackley (142), and Myhre (121) have also collected 100+ digs through 20 contests. … Bauer has recorded 10 or more digs 16 times this season and owns a single-match season-high 23 digs against Northland on Sept. 8.
• SERVING UP ACES: CSS has recorded 101 service aces this season, with Myhre (37), Ziegler (21), Bauer (16), and Yackley (11) all having reached double figures in acts through 20 contests.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, St. Scholastica has amassed 577 kills (9.16 kps), 536 assists (8.51 aps), 101 aces (1.60 aps), 938 digs (14.89 dps), and 63 blocks (1.00 bps). … Seventeen of the Saints’ 20 matches this season have been decided in three sets — including all three of CSS’s victories. St. Scholastica is 3-14 in three-set matches and 0-3 in four-setters.
