SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their weekend conference matches against Bethel and Hamline sitting at 11-16 overall, including sporting a 3-5 mark in six conference contests.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals split their two conference matches last weekend, falling to St. Catherine 3-0 last Friday at the SMU Gym, before bouncing back with a 3-1 road win over St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., the following evening.
• GETTING DEFENSIVE: The Cardinals have set a program record for fewest points allowed in a set twice this season, holding Carleton to just seven second-set points in SMU’s 3-0 win over the Knights on Oct. 4, before breaking that mark by limiting Crown to a meager five first-set points in Saint Mary’s 3-0 victory on Oct. 14. … Saint Mary’s has now held an opponent under 10 points in a set three times this season, also holding Crown to eight points in the third set last Saturday. … Prior to this season, Saint Mary’s had previously held opponents to eight points in a set three times — beating Finlandia 25-8 on Sept. 2, 2011; and winning 25-8 over both Aurora on Sept. 6, 2013 and Rowan on Oct. 8, 2016.
• SWEEPING UP: Fifteen of Saint Mary’s 26 matches this season have been decided by 3-0 sweeps. The Cardinals are 5-11 in those 16 contests — beating Marian, Lawrence, Luther, Carleton, and Crown, while falling to Elmhurst, UW-Superior, Coe, the University of Dubuque, No. 18 Gustavus, Concordia, Saint Benedict, Nebraska Wesleyan, Augustana (Ill.), North Central (Ill.), and St. Catherine.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: With their 3-2 loss to Central-Iowa on Sept. 23, Saint Mary’s has now played six matches that have been extended to a fifth set. The Cardinals are 3-3 in those six contests — beating UMN Morris, Northland, and Buena Vista, while falling to UW-La Crosse, Monmouth, and Central-Iowa.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) heads into this weekend’s matches against Bethel and Hamline boasting a team-high 384 kills through 27 matches — second in the MIAC — and is one of four Cardinals who have eclipsed the 100-kill plateau. Kali Olson (New York Mills, Minn.) is sitting second on the team with 253 kills, followed by Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) with 177 and Jazzy Davis (La Crosse, Wis.) with 166.
• AMONG MIAC & NCAA LEADERS: McNally ranks second in NCAA Division III with 1,157 total attacks and sixth in total kills with 384 this season.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With her ninth kill against Central-Iowa on Sept. 23, McNally became the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. McNally enters this weekend’s matches owning 1,143 kills, leaving her 12th all-time. Next up: Brandi Blattner ’18 with 1,164.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills in 24 of the Cardinals’ 27 matches this season, including four matches of 20 or more kills. … McNally tallied a season-high 24 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2.
• HITTING 10 x 4: The Cardinals had a season-high four players record 10 or more kills in their 3-2 win over Buena Vista on Sept. 19. Bruchert led the way with 18, followed by McNally with 14, Olson with 12, and Davis with 10.
• HITTING 20 x 2: Saint Mary’s boasted two players with 20+ kills in its 3-2 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 2 — McNally led the charge with 24 and Olson chipped in 21.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had four players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Olson recorded a career-best 21 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while Bruchert delivered a career-high 19 kills at Buena Vista on Sept. 19; Davis tallied a career-high 15 vs. Loras on Sept. 15, and Baker recorded 10 vs. Lawrence on Sept. 1.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) has accounted for 907 of the Cardinals’ 1,037 assists this season, including a single-match career high of 53 against Monmouth on Sept. 16. … VanErp has delivered at least 20 helpers in 25 of SMU’s 27 matches this season, including 30 or more helpers 15 times. … VanErp’s 53 assists against Loras on Sept. 16 marked the second time the junior has delivered 50 of more assists, and were the most since Lillian Braun recorded a 53-assist performance against Coe on Sept. 27, 2019.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally, who led the team with 14 double-doubles in 2022, has recorded 14 kill-dig double-doubles this season, while VanErp has notched the first 10 set-dig double-doubles of her collegiate career.
• DIGGING IT: Lindsey Rossow (Rochester, Minn.) leads the Cardinals in digs with 348, followed by McNally (253), VanErp (225), Devann Clemens (Chatfield, Minn. / 142), and Alison Wu (Woodbury, Minn. / 138). … Rossow posted a career-high 30 digs against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while five other Cardinals — VanErp (18), Clemens (16), Wu (16), Isabella Schei (Stewartville, Minn. / 14), and Ashley Rogers (Onamia, Minn. / 12) — have also recorded single-match career-highs of 10+ digs. … As a team, SMU has put a season-high five players in double figures in digs twice — against Central-Iowa on Sept. 23 and vs. Augsburg on Oct. 6.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 907 assists, VanErp also leads the team with 41 service aces. Olson (34), Rossow (32), Clemens (21), McNally (20), and Wu (17) have also reached double figures in aces this season. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 182 aces through 27 matches. … Saint Mary’s recorded a season-high eight aces against Marian on Sept. 1.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) was named MIAC Specialty Player of the Week on Sept. 6, after racking up racking up 136 assists, two assist-dig double-doubles and eight service aces in SMU’s four Sugar Loaf Classic matches.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: SMU boasts 1140 kills (11.63 kps), 1037 assists (10.58 aps), 182 aces (1.86 aps), 1,493 digs (15.23 dps), and 115 blocks (1.17 bps) in 27 matches. … The Cardinals have recorded 60 or more kills in a match three times — posting 62 against Central-Iowa on Sept. 23, 65 against Monmouth on Sept. 16, and a season-high 66 at Buena Vista on Sept. 19 — while also tallying a season-high 61 assists against both Monmouth and Buena Vista. … SMU is 9-18 in the first set this season, while going 10-17 in the second, 12-15 in the third, 7-4 in the fourth, and 3-3 in the fifth. … SMU has played just five matches decided in four sets — beating Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 9, St. Olaf on Sept. 30, and St. Scholastica on Oct. 21, while falling to Loras on Sept. 15 and Augsburg on Oct. 6.
BETHEL SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Royals head into their conference matches against Saint Mary’s and Gustavus this weekend sitting at 9-13 overall, including 4-4 in MIAC play.
• LAST ACTION: Bethel enters the weekend on the heels of a 1-1 split in a pair of marathon MIAC matches last weekend, falling Concordia 3-2 in Moorhead, Minn., on Friday, before rebounding with a 3-2 win over St. Catherine the following evening in Arden Hills, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: This weekend’s matches at Saint Mary’s and at Gustavus are the final two road contests of the regular season for the Royals, who close out their regular-season slate on their home court on Friday against Augsburg. … BU is 4-2 on its home floor, while sitting at 5-11 on the road — with four of those five victories coming in neutral-site contests.
• ON THE ATTACK: Dani Friedges has amassed a team-leading 301 kills through 22 matches. She is one of three Royals who have eclipsed the 100-kill mark this season, being joined by Abigail Drury (227) and Peyton Howie (190), while Marley Webb is just two kills shy of becoming the fourth member of the Royals’ 100-kill club. … Friedges has posted four matches with 20 or more kills, including a season-high 23-kill effort against UMN Morris on Sept. 6, while Drury owns one 20-kill match this season. … Friedges leads the team with 12 kill-dig double-doubles this season.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Brenna Stark has accounted for 736 of the team’s 900 assists this season, and has posted at least 15 helpers in all 22 matches this season. … Stark has delivered eight matches of 40+ assists, including 50 against Concordia on Oct. 20 and a season-high 54 against UMN Morris on Sept. 6. … Stark boasts 14 assist-dig double-doubles.
• DIGGING IT: Bethel boasts five players who have delivered at least 100 digs this season, led by Devanie Andre with 351. Friedges (269), Stark (236), Taylor Barrett (196) and Olivia Johnson (119) have also reached the century mark in digs. … Andre has posted at least 10 digs in all 22 matches, including four 20+ dig performances. … Andre recorded a single-match, season-high 29 digs against UMN Morris on Sept. 6.
• SERVING UP ACES: BU has served up 151 aces this season, led by Stark with 40. Andre (31), Howie (21), Johnson (20), Friedges (19), and Taylor Barrett (13) have also reached double figures in aces through 22 matches.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, BU has collected 986 kills (11.74 kps), 900 assists (10.71 aps), 151 aces (1.80 aps), 1,460 digs (17.36 dps), and 145 blocks (1.73 bps). … Bethel posted a season-high in kills (67) against Dominican on Sept. 9, while delivering season-bests in assists (64) and digs (98) against UMN Morris on Sept. 6. … Six of Bethel’s nine wins this season have come in three sets. The Royals are 6-5 in three-setters, while going 1-3 in four-setters and 2-5 in matches extended to a fifth set. … Bethel had its season-high three-match winning streak snapped with last Friday’s 3-2 loss to Concordia. The Royals are 4-1 in their last five contests.

• FOR THE RECORD: Hamline heads into its conference matches against Macalester and Saint Mary’s sitting at 6-14 overall, including 1-7 through its first eight conference contests.
• LAST ACTION: Jenna Rubbelke tied a single-match school record with 30 digs in three sets, as the Pipers cruised to a 3-0 nonconference sweep of UW-Superior Tuesday night in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Pipers are in the midst of playing five of six matches on their home court, the lone exception, last Saturday’s 3-0 win over Carleton in Northfield, Minn. … HU has collected three of its six wins at home, going 3-6 at Hutton Arena, while sitting at 3-8 in road contests.
• ON THE ATTACK: Hamline enters the weekend boasting five players who have recorded 100 or more kills through 20 matches. Elizabeth Lopata leads the Piper charge with 193 kills, and is joined in the Century Club by Lauren Wilborn (132), Julianna Boyum (125), Faith Johnson (118), and Lindsey Eckelman (114). … Lopata has recorded a team-high 11 matches of 10 or more kills, with Johnson adding 10+ kills in a match six times. … Lopata posted a single-match season-high 17 kills against Central-Iowa on Oct. 13. … Lopata has recorded a pair of kill-dig double-doubles, with Wilborn accounting for the other.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Kaitlyn Kotek has accounted for 637 of the team’s 764 assists, and has reached double figures in assists in all 20 matches this season. … Kotek has eclipsed the 30-assist mark 15 times and posted a season-best 52-assist effort against Central-Iowa on Oct. 13. … Kotek owns 10 assist-dig double-doubles, including a 31-assist, 17-dig effort against Saint Benedict on Oct. 20.
• DIGGING IT: Jenna Rubbelke, who is currently ranked seventh in NCAA Division III with 6.21 digs-per-set, owns a team-leading 466 digs. Rubbelke is one of six HU players with at least 100 digs, being joined by Wilborn (202), Kotek (180), Mandy Dierks (139), Johnson (102), and Lopata (102). … Rubbelke has reached double figures in digs in all 20 matches, including 35 against Wartburg on Sept. 16 and a season-best 48 against Central-Iowa on Oct. 13.
• SERVING UP ACES: Hamline has amassed 157 service aces through 20 matches. Rubbelke leads the way for the Pipers with 35 aces, with Kotek (30), Dierks (30), Wilborn (22), and Lopata (20) also posting double figures in aces.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, Hamline has posted 851 kills (11.35 kps), 764 assists (10.19 aps), 157 aces (2.09 aps), 1,317 digs (17.56 dps), and 103 blocks (1.37 bps). …The Pipers posted single-match season-highs in kills (58), assists (54), and digs (105) against Central-Iowa on Oct. 13, while serving up a season-best 15 aces against Lawrence on Oct. 13. … Hamline heads into the weekend having won two straight for the first time this season — sweeping both Carleton and UW-Superior.
