SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their season-opener against Martin Luther having closed out the 2022-23 season sitting at 9-16 overall and 8-14 in conference play.
• HOME SWEET HOME: SMU finished the year 6-6 in its 12 home games, while sporting a 3-10 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: Fourteen of the Cardinals’ last 19 contests were decided by 10 points or less — including eight of their last 12. Those 14 nail-biting contests included wins over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (60-53), Macalester (73-65), Augsburg (71-63), and Bethel (70-68 OT); and losses to UW-Stevens Point (81-79 OT), Penn State Behrend (71-65), Hamline (69-60), Saint Benedict (65-58), Bethel (60-59), Augsburg (50-44), Concordia (69-61), St. Catherine (75-67), Carleton (66-57), and St. Olaf (75-69).
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) ended the season leading the team in scoring with a 16.5 ppg average, while Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) also averaged in double figures at 10.1 ppg. … Paulson netted 10 or more points in 22 of SMU’s 25 games. … Paulson led or shared the team lead in scoring in 17 of SMU’s 25 games — including eight of its last nine.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s had a player score 20 or more points in a game 10 times a year ago. Paulson owned seven games or 20 or more points — including a season-high 26-point effort against Hamline on Jan. 30, 2023 — while Goettelman and Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) each scored 20 or more points twice. … Paulson scored 20+ points 24 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times and Streveler once.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: Paulson and Streveler each reached the 20-point mark in SMU’s 83-69 win over St. Scholastica on Feb. 4, 2023 with Paulson scoring 26 points and Streveler adding 21. It was the lone time in which SMU had two players net 20+ points in the same game, and the first time since Jan. 10 of 2020 that the Cardinals had two 20+ point scorers.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point in SMU’s first meeting against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, closed out her collegiate career No. 3 all-time with 1,566 career points. Only Mary Schultz ’86 (1,982) and Tricia Rasmussen ’93 (1,880) scored more points in their SMU career than Paulson.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, 2022, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson closed out her SMU career with 255 3-pointers, while also holding the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 724.
• NO REST: Paulson started every game during her five-year collegiate career — a program-record 107 consecutive starts. Jessica Thone ’13, who previously held the consecutive starts record at 104, holds the school record for games played at 109. … Paulson played every minute of SMU’s Jan. 30 game against Hamline, marking the third time she played all 40 minutes of a game in 2022-23. She averaged 35.3 minutes-per-game.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s put four players in double figures three times last season — against Augsburg on Feb. 8, 2023, vs. St. Catherine on Jan. 25, 2023, and vs. Carleton on Dec. 3, 2022. … SMU received at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3, 2022. … The Cardinals got scoring from 12 different players in their 83-69 win over St. Scholastica on Feb. 4, 2023.
• CAREER SCORING HIGHS: The Cardinals had six players record career-highs of 10 or more points: Goettelman (23 points), Streveler (22), Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill. / 17), Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis. / 15), Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn. / 14), and Grace Schaffer (Farmington, Minn. / 11).
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson led the Cardinals with 203 rebounds (8.1 rpg) last season, followed by Cruze (153, 6.1 rpg), Goettelman (103, 4.1 rpg), Streveler (93, 3.7 rpg), and Schaffer (85, 3.4 rpg). … Paulson hauled in a career-high 17 rebounds against St. Scholastica on Jan. 4, 2023. It was the highest single-game performance since Brandi Blattner's 20-rebound showing on Feb. 10, 2018. … Cruze pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds against Hamline on Jan. 20. … SMU had a player record 10 or more rebounds in a game 10 times — five times by both Paulson and Cruze.
• DOUBLING UP: Paulson recorded four double-doubles in 2022-23, giving her nine career double-doubles. Cruze accounted for SMU’s other two double-doubles. … Cruze scored 11 points in both of her double-doubles.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 13 3-pointers against St. Olaf on Feb. 1, 2023, shooting 59.1 percent (13-for-22) from behind the arc. It marked the second time SMU hit double figures in 3-pointers — having netted 12 against Carleton on Dec. 3, 2022. … SMU’s 13 3-pointers were just two shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … As a team, SMU drained 172 3-pointers, led by Paulson (55), Streveler (43), and Goettelman (31). … Streveler matched her season-high with five 3-pointers against St. Olaf on Feb. 1, 2023. The senior also delivered five treys against Hamline on Jan. 4, 2023.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasted a team-high 75 assists a year ago, 17 up on Paulson, while Goettelman chipped in 45 helpers. The trio combined for 178 of SMU’s 286 assists. … Paulson and Goettelman each recorded a season-high seven-assist game — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4, 2022 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14, 2022.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, 2022, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 70-68 win over Bethel on Feb. 15, 2023 was its second overtime game of the season. SMU dropped an 81-79 OT decision to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14, 2022.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Music City Classic on Dec. 29-30, 2022 marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals shot 37.9 percent from the field (532-for-1405), with 172 3-pointers, and were 331-for-462 (71.6 %) from the free throw line. … SMU averaged 62.7 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents scored at a 66.5 ppg clip. … The Cardinals eclipsed the 80-point twice — netting 81 in an 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3, 2022, while tallying a season-best 83 points in beating St. Scholastica 83-69 on Feb. 4, 2023. The 83 points against CSS marked their highest offensive output since beating Carleton 85-58 on Jan. 8, 2022.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Knights head into their season-opening road showdown against Saint Mary’s on the heels of a 9-16 showing in 2022-23, including a 2-12 mark during the 14-game UMAC schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: Martin Luther closed out its season dropping six of its last seven contests, including a season-ending 77-49 loss to Northwestern on Feb. 18, 2023 in New Ulm, Minn.
• QUICK START, SLOW FINISH: After opening the season with wins in four of their first six contests, the Knights closed out the season 5-14 over its final 19 contests, including losing streaks of four and five games.
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Martin Luther closed out 2022-23 boasting a pair of players who averaged in double figures in scoring. Lydia Feidt was the Knights’ offensive leader, boasting a 12.1 ppg scoring average, while Emma Nelson was closed behind, scoring at an 11.3 ppg clip. … Nelson scored 10 or more points in 17 of the Knights’ 25 games, including a season-best 22-point showing against Northwestern on Jan. 13, 2023. … Feidt closed out the season scoring 10+ points in a game 10 times — including a season-high 19 points against both Lake Forest on Nov. 12 and vs. Waldorf on Nov. 18.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Along with her 11.3 ppg scoring average, Nelson also delivered a team-high 147 rebounds (6.1 rpg). Nelson was one of three MLC players who eclipsed the 100-rebound mark last season, being joined by Jordyn Heckenford (129, 5.2 rpg) and Grace Kieselhorst (112, 4.5 rpg). …
• DOUBLING UP: Nelson delivered four double-doubles last season, including 15 points and a season-high 12 boards against Northland on Feb. 4. …. Heckendorf recorded MLC’s other two double-doubles, posting a season-best 14 boards and adding 14 points against both Waldorf on Nov. 28, 2022 and vs. Crown on Jan. 20, 2023.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: Martin Luther poured in 136 3-pointers last season, led by Heckendorf with 27 and Nelson with 23. Feidt (16), Lauren Paulsen (15), Kieselhorst (11), and Kortney Behnke (10) also reached double figures in 3-pointers last season.
• LENDING A HAND: Heckendorf dished out a team-leading 77 assists last season. She was one of eight Knights to posted 10+ helpers last season, being joined by Behnke (45), Feidt (26), Kieselhorst (25), Paulsen (23)Ally Platzer (17), Nelson (14), and Maya Price (12).

• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS:The Knights closed out 2022-23 averaging 58.6 ppg, while their opponents scored at a 65.9 ppg clip. … Martin Luther scored 70 or more points six times a year ago, including a season-high 84 points in their final win of the season — an 84-77 victory over North Central (Minn.) on Feb. 17. On the flip side, MLC allowed 70+ points in a game 13 times, and allowed 80 or more points on four separate occasions. … Four of Martin Luther’s nine wins were by seven points or less.
