SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals, coming off a 9-16 record a year ago, head into their Tuesday nonconference game against Northland on the heels of a 61-56 nonconference win over Martin Luther last Saturday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) poured in 20 points and added 13 rebounds in leading the Cardinals to a five-point, 61-56 season-opening victory over Martin Luther last Saturday.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game against Northland is the second straight home game for the Cardinals, who finished last season 6-6 in their 12 home games, while sporting a 3-10 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: With last Saturday’s season-opening five-point victory over Martin Luther, 15 of the Cardinals’ last 20 contests were decided by 10 points or less — including nine of their last 13.
• CARRYING THE OFFENSIVE LOAD: Goettelman was the only Cardinal to finish in double figures in last Saturday’s season-opener against Martin Luther, scoring 20 points. Nine of Goettelman’s team-leading 20 points came from the free throw line, where she was 9 of 11. … Grace Schaffer () and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) each chipped in nine points against the Knights last Saturday.
• GREATER THAN 20: With Goettelman’s 20-point performance against Martin Luther last Saturday, Saint Mary’s has now had a player score 20 or more points in a game 11 times over the past two seasons. … Goettelman has now netted 20+ points four times in her collegiate career.
• CAREER SCORING HIGHS: The Cardinals had six players record career-highs of 10 or more points last season — including returners Goettelman (23 points), Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill. / 17), Cruze (14), and Schaffer (11).
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Goettelman added a career-high 13 rebounds to her 20 points against Martin Luther last Saturday, while Cruze chipped in 11 boards. … Cruze finished last year with 153 rebounds (6.1 rpg), and pulled down a career-high 14 boards against Hamline on Jan. 20, 2023. … SMU had a player record 10 or more rebounds in a game 10 times — including five times by Cruze.
• DOUBLING UP: Goettelman’s 20-point, 13-rebound performance against Martin Luther last Saturday was her first collegiate double-double. … Cruze headed into the 2023-24 season with a pair of double-doubles.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: Saint Mary’s four 3-pointers against Martin Luther last Saturday came from four different players — Goettelman, Schaffer, Autumn Passehl, and Lindsey Lettner. … The Cardinals, who drained 172 3-pointers a year ago, poured in a season-high 13 3-pointers against St. Olaf on Feb. 1, 2023, shooting 59.1 percent (13-for-22) from behind the arc. … SMU’s 13 3-pointers were just two shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022.
• LENDING A HAND: Maddie Wall () delivered a team-high three assists against Martin Luther last Saturday, with Cruze and Zoe Fink each adding two.
• PROGRAM FIRST: Tuesday’s game against Northland is the first between the two teams in program history. It’s the third time in the last two seasons Saint Mary’s has faced an opponent for the first time. The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at last seasons Music City Classic marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals shot 26.0 percent from the field (20 of 77) in last Saturday’s win over Martin Luther, but were just 4-for-30 (13.3 %) from behind the 3-point line. … The Cardinals knocked down 17 of 26 free throws (65.4 %) from the free throw line vs. the Knights last Saturday. … Saint Mary’s averaged 62.7 ppg a year ago, while the Cardinals’ opponents scored at a 66.5 ppg clip. … The Cardinals eclipsed the 80-point twice last season — netting 81 in an 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3, 2022, while tallying a season-best 83 points in beating St. Scholastica 83-69 on Feb. 4, 2023. The 83 points against CSS marked their highest offensive output since beating Carleton 85-58 on Jan. 8, 2022.
NORTHLAND SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The LumberJills head into Tuesday’s nonconference road contest against Saint Mary’s on the heels of a season-opening 81-31 loss to Lakeland last Saturday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Northland failed to reach double figures in points in three of the four quarters, while Lakeland netted at least 17 points in all four quarters, as the Muskies dealt NC an 81-31 nonconference setback in Ashland, Wis., last Saturday.
• ROAD WARRIORS: After opening the season with an 81-31 season-opening home loss to Lakeland, the LumberJills are in the midst of playing five consecutive road games. Northland does not play another game on their home court at Kendrigan Center until Dec. 2, when they square off against UW-La Crosse. … Northland picked up six of its eight wins last season on their home court, going 6-4 in 10 home contests.
• CARRYING THE OFFENSIVE LOAD: Tiana McKinley, playing her first game as a LumberJill, scored a team-high 14 points in last Saturday’s loss to Lakeland. … Katelyn Altaha chipped in eight points against Lawrence last Saturday, while Kodie Rampp and Tara Sandoval added five and four points, respectively. … McKinley, Altaha, Rampp, and Sandoval were the only players to score for Northland against Lawrence.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: McKinley also led the LumberJills with five rebounds against Lakeland, one more than Madi Owens, with Altaha chipping in three.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: Northland finished 4 of 24 from behind the 3-point line in their season-opener against Lakeland, led by Altaha with two. McKinley and Rampp each drained one trey against the Muskies.
• LENDING A HAND: The LumberJills finished with just four assists against Lakeland last Saturday, getting solo helpers from Altaha, McKinley, Rampp, and Owens.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS:As a team, Northland finished 9 of 39 (23.1 %) from the field in its season-opener against Lakeland last Saturday, and hit on just 4 of 24 3-pointers (16.7 %). … The LumberJills went 9-for-10 from the free throw line against the Muskies. … Northland scored a single-quarter season-high 11 points in the third quarter against Lakeland last Saturday — it was the only quarter in which the LumberJills reached double figures, managing just seven points in the second and fourth quarters, and six in the first.
