SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their Tuesday conference-opening game at Hamline sitting at 2-1 overall, including 0-1 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s did not have an answered to St. Catherine’s red-hot start, as the Wildcats erupted for 30 first-quarter points in dealing the Cardinals their first loss of the season, an 83-45 setback last Friday in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game against Hamline is the second of back-to-back road games for the Cardinals, who opened the season with a pair of home contests — dispatching of both Martin Luther (61-56) and Northland (78-30). … SMU is now 8-6 in its last 14 home games, while sitting at 3-11 in its last 14 road contests.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: Last Friday’s loss to St. Catherine snapped the Cardinals’ season-opening two-game winning streak. The back-to-back wins marked the first time SMU has opened the season with two straight wins since opening the 2015-16 season with wins over Crown (88-34) and Saint Benedict (75-67).
• CLOSE CALLS: With their season-opening five-point, 61-56 victory over Martin Luther on Nov. 11, 15 of the Cardinals’ last 22 contests were decided by 10 points or less — including nine of their last 15.
• NOT-SO-CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals 48-point, 78-30 win over Northland on Nov. 14 was their most-lopsided victory since a 54-point, 88-34 win over Crown on Nov. 21, 2015. … Northland’s 30 points scored on Tuesday were the fewest allowed by the Cardinals since holding Crown to 29 in a 107-29 victory on Nov. 23, 2013, while the LumberJills’ six-point second and third quarters were the fewest points allowed by SMU since the NCAA went back to the quarter system prior to the 2015-16 season.
• CARRYING THE OFFENSIVE LOAD: Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) heads into the Cardinals’ conference matchup at Hamline on Tuesday averaging a team-best 13.7 ppg, and has netted 10 or more points in two of SMU’s three games this season — scoring 20 points in SMU’s season-opening win over Martin Luther and adding 11 points against St. Catherine last Friday. … Grace Schaffer (Farmington, Minn.) is second on the team in scoring with a 7.0 ppg scoring average, followed by Riley Schiernbeck (Ida Grove, Iowa) at 6.3 ppg. … Nine of Goettelman’s team-leading 20 points against Martin Luther on Nov. 11 came from the free throw line, where she was 9 of 11.
• GREATER THAN 20: With Goettelman’s 20-point performance against Martin Luther on Nov. 11, Saint Mary’s has now had a player score 20 or more points in a game 11 times over the past two seasons. … Goettelman has netted 20+ points four times in her collegiate career.
• CAREER SCORING HIGHS: Schiernbeck’s 11-point effort against Northland on Nov. 14 was a career high. … The Cardinals had six players record career-highs of 10 or more points last season — including returners Goettelman (23 points), Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill. / 17), Cruze (14), and Schaffer (11).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Cardinals got scoring from 12 different players in their 78-30 win over Northland on Nov. 14. … SMU finished 2022-23 with two games in which 10 or more players scored. SMU received at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3, and got scoring from 12 different players in their 83-69 win over St. Scholastica on Feb. 4.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Goettelman leads the Cardinals in rebounds with 24 (8.0 rpg), four more than Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn. / 20, 6.7 rpg), followed by Maddie Wall ( / 16, 5.3 rpg) and Schiernbeck (15, 5.0 rpg). … Goettelman recorded a career-high 13 rebounds against Martin Luther on Nov. 11. … Cruze finished last year with 153 rebounds (6.1 rpg), and pulled down a career-high 14 boards against Hamline on Jan. 20, 2023. … SMU had a player record 10 or more rebounds in a game 10 times a year ago — including five times by Cruze.
• DOUBLING UP: Goettelman’s 20-point, 13-rebound performance against Martin Luther on Nov. 11 was her first collegiate double-double. … Cruze entered this season with a pair of double-doubles.

• PROGRAM FIRST: SMU’s Nov. 14 game against Northland was the first between the two teams in program history. It’s the third time in the last two seasons Saint Mary’s has faced an opponent for the first time. The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at last season’s Music City Classic marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 29.0 percent from the field (61-for-210), with 14 3-pinters, and have drained 48 of 69 free throws (69.6 %). … SMU is averaging 61.3 ppg, while limiting its first three opponents to just 56.3 ppg. … Saint Mary’s 78 points against Northland on Nov. 14 were a season-high. … The Cardinals eclipsed the 80-point twice last season — netting 81 in an 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3, 2022, while tallying a season-best 83 points in beating St. Scholastica 83-69 on Feb. 4, 2023. The 83 points against CSS marked their highest offensive output since beating Carleton 85-58 on Jan. 8, 2022.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Pipers head into Tuesday’s conference matchup against Saint Mary’s on the heels of a season-opening 78-36 win over Martin Luther last Wednesday. … Hamline closed out the 2022-23 season boasting an 18-9 overall record, including a 14-8 mark in MIAC action. … HU reached the MIAC Playoff semifinals last season, beating St. Olaf 76-64 in the opening round, before falling to Concordia 74-64 in the semis.
• LAST TIME OUT: Hamline got scoring from 13 of the 16 players who saw playing time, as the Pipers coasted to a lopsided, 78-36 win over Martin Luther last Wednesday in St. Paul, Minn. The victory was the first collegiate coaching win for Hamline HC Joshua Hersch.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the second of back-to-back home games for the Pipers, Hamline closed out the 2022-23 season 10-3 on their home court, while sporting an 8-6 record away from Hutton Arena.
• STINGY D: Hamline held Martin Luther to just 20.5 percent from the field (9-for-44). It marked the lowest shooting percentage since limiting Crown to 20.0 percent (10-for-50) in an 84-35 HU win on December 30, 2014..
• CARRYING THE OFFENSIVE LOAD: Kate Trachsel and Camille Cummings each scored 16 points, while Lydia Lecher chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds in last Wednesday’s win over Marin Luther. … Lecher was the team’s leading scorer a year ago, averaging 13.2 ppg. Lecher was the only Piper to average in double figures, with Michaela Stamer finishing second on the team with an 8.0 ppg average, followed by Tess Hauer (7.8 ppg) and Chan’el Anderson-Manning (7.6 ppg).
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Lecher hauled in a team-leading nine rebounds against Martin Luther last Wednesday, two more than Sophie Stork …. Hamline boasted three players who eclipsed the 100-rebound mark last season — Lecher (171, 6.3 rpg), Iyanna Wieland (110, 4.1 rpg), and Alyssa Williamson (103, 3.8 rpg).
• DOUBLING UP: Lecher — who missed out on her first double-double of the season by one rebound against Martin Luther last Wednesday — posted the Pipers’ only two double-doubles last season, scoring 17 points and adding 13 rebounds against Saint Mary’s on Jan. 4, before delivering 16 points and 11 boards against Augsburg three days later.

Anderson-Manning led the Pipers with 69 assists, followed by Williamson (61), Lecher (32), and Stamer (31).
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS:As a team, Hamline shot 43.3 percent from the field (26-for-60) from the field, with 13 3-pointers, in last Wednesday’s season-opening win over Martin Luther. … HU knocked down 13 of 19 free throws (68.4 %) against the Knights. … Hamline’s 78 points in last Wednesday’s 78-36 win over Martin Luther were one shy of their season-high from a year ago. HU netted 79 points in wins over Macalester (79-49) and Crown (79-55) last season.
