• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their second conference meeting with Augsburg on Wednesday sitting at 7-14 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) scored 21 points and added a career-high 17 rebounds, as the Cardinals erupted for a season-high 83 points in routing St. Scholastica 83-69 last Saturday at the SMU Gym.
• ROAD WARRIORS: SMU is in the midst of playing three of four games on the road, the lone exception — last Saturday’s home showdown with St. Scholastica. … SMU is 5-5 in its 10 home games this season, while sporting a 2-9 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: Twelve of the Cardinals’ last 15 contests have been decided by 10 points or less — including six of their last eight. Those 12 nail-biting contests include wins over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (60-53) and Macalester (73-65), and losses to UW-Stevens Point (81-79 OT), Penn State Behrend (71-65), Hamline (69-60), Saint Benedict (65-58), Bethel (60-59), Augsburg (50-44), Concordia (69-61), St. Catherine (75-67), Carleton (66-57), and St. Olaf (75-69).
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Paulson heads into Wednesday’s matchup against Augsburg leading the team in scoring with a 16.5 ppg average, while Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures at 10.9 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in 19 of SMU’s 21 games this season. … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led or shared the team lead in scoring in 18 of their 21 contests, with Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.), Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.), and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) each leading the team in scoring once.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in a game nine times this season. Paulson owns six games or 20 or more points — including a season-high 26-point effort against Hamline on Jan. 30 — while Goettelman and Streveler have each scored 20 or more points twice. … Paulson has scored 20+ points 23 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times and Streveler once.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: Paulson and Streveler each reached the 20-point mark in SMU’s 83-69 win over St. Scholastica last Saturday, with Paulson scoring 26 points and Streveler adding 21. It was the first time this season SMU has had two players net 20+ points in the same game, and the first time since Jan. 10 of 2020 that the Cardinals had two 20+ point scorers.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting third all-time with 1,501 career points. Next up on the list — Tricia Rasmussen ’93 (1,880).
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Wednesday’s game vs. Augsburg with 245 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 703.
• NO REST: Paulson has started every game during her five-year collegiate career — a span of 103 consecutive starts. Her 103 career starts rank second all-time. Jessica Thone ’13 holds the school record with 104 straight starts and also holds the school record for games played at 109. … Paulson played every minute of SMU’s Jan. 30 game against Hamline, marking the third time this season she has played all 40 minutes of a game. She is averaging 35.4 minutes-per-game.
• PERFECTION: Paulson drained 22 consecutive free throws over a four-game span, before having the streak broken with a miss on her final FT attempt against Concordia on Jan. 21. The senior’s streak included a perfect 10-for-10 showing against St. Scholastica on Jan. 14. … Paulson’s 10 made free throws in 10 attempts were a career high and marked the first time an SMU player has gone 10-for-10 or better since Hallie Schmeling was 10-for-10 against St. Catherine on Feb. 13, 2019.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s put four players in double figures for the second time this season in its 75-67 loss to St. Catherine on Jan. 25. Paulson and Goettelman each scored 13, followed by Grace Schaffer (Farmington, Minn.) with 11 and Coleman with 10. … Saint Mary’s also put four players in double figures against Carleton in the teams’ first meeting on Dec. 3 — and got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: The Cardinals got scoring from 12 different players in last Saturday’s 83-69 win over St. Scholastica.
• CAREER SCORING HIGHS: The Cardinals have had six players record career-highs of 10 or more points this season: Goettelman (23 points), Streveler (22), Coleman (17), Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis. / 15), Cruze (14), and Grace Schaffer (Farmington, Minn. / 11).
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 169 rebounds (8.0 rpg), followed by Cruze (129, 6.1 rpg), Goettelman (92, 4.4 rpg), Streveler (72, 3.4 rpg), and Schaffer (72, 3.4 rpg). … Paulson hauled in a career-high 17 rebounds against St. Scholastica last Saturday. It was the highest single-game performance since Brandi Blattner's 20-rebound showing on Feb. 10, 2018. … Cruze pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds against Hamline on Jan. 20. … SMU has had a player record 10 rebounds in a game eight times — four times each by Paulson and Cruze.
• DOUBLING UP: Paulson has recorded four double-doubles this season and now owns nine double-doubles in her collegiate career. Cruze has accounted for SMU’s other two double-doubles this season.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 13 3-pointers against St. Olaf on Feb. 1, shooting 59.1 percent (13-for-22) from behind the arc. It marked the second time this season SMU has hit double figures in 3-pointers — having netted 12 against Carleton on Dec. 3. … SMU’s 13 3-pointers were just two shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … As a team, SMU has drained 147 3-pointers, led by Paulson (45), Streveler (35), and Goettelman (29). … Streveler knocked down a season-high five 3-pointers against St. Olaf on Feb. 1. It was the second time this season the senior has hit five treys in a game.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 66 assists, 15 up on Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 31 helpers. The trio have combined for 146 of SMU’s 239 assists through 21 games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Music City Classic on Dec. 29-30 marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 38.1 percent from the field (459-for-1206), with 147 3-pointers, and are 269-for-380 (70.8 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 63.5 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 66.9 ppg clip. … The Cardinals have eclipsed the 80-point twice this season — netting 81 in an 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3, while tallying a season-best 83 points in beating St. Scholastica 83-69 last Saturday. The 83 points against CSS marked their highest offensive output since beating Carleton 85-58 on Jan. 8, 2022.
AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies enter their mid-week conference game against Saint Mary’s sitting at 11-10 overall, including 8-10 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Olaf used two big quarters — outscoring Augsburg 22-13 in the second quarter and 18-12 in the fourth — as the Oles dealt the Auggies a 72-59 setback last Saturday at Skoglund Center in Northfield, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After two straight road games, Wednesday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s is the first of three home games in a regular season-ending four-game stretch for the Auggies, who are 5-4 on their home court, while sporting a 6-6 mark away from Si Melby Hall.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: Augsburg’s 72-59 loss to St. Olaf last Saturday snapped its two-game winning streak, and also ended a run of three consecutive games in which the Auggies held their opponent to 55 or fewer points.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Augsburg heads into its showdown against Saint Mary’s boasting a pair of players who are averaging in double figures in scoring. Jaley Coplin leads the way for Augsburg, owning a 16.0 ppg scoring average,, followed by Anja Smith, who is scoring at a 14.1 ppg clip. … Coplin has accounted for four of the Auggies’ top five single-game offensive performances, including a season-high 27 points against both Saint Benedict on Jan. 1 and vs. Carleton four days later.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Samalya Buchanan hauled in seven rebounds against St. Olaf last Saturday to eclipse the 100-rebound plateau. Buchanan leads the Auggies with 104 boards (5.0 rpg), followed by Smith with 93 (5.5 rpg) and Coplin with 86 (4.5 rpg). … Buchanan and Smith have both recorded season-high 12-rebound performances this season — Buchanan against UW-River Falls on Nov. 15 and Smith vs. Carleton on Nov. 30.
• DOUBLING UP: Smith has recorded two double-doubles this season — a 26-point, 12-rebound performance against Carleton on Nov. 30 and a 11-point, 10-rebound showing vs. Gustavus on Dec. 10. …
Buchanan owns Augsburg’s only other double-double with a 12 points, 12-rebound showing against UW-River Falls on Nov. 15.
• FROM DOWNTOWN: Coplin has been the Auggies’ long-range bomber this season, raining in 47 of the team’s 116 3-pointers through 21 games. Smith (17), Kalena Myers (13), Alli Born (12), and Katie Manecke (10) have also knocked down 10 or more treys this season.
• LENDING A HAND: Manecke and Myers have been in a giving mood this season, dishing out 42 and 41 assists, respectively. The duo are two of three Auggies with 30 or more helpers this season, being joined by Buchanan (33).
• BY THE NUMBERS: As a team, Augsburg is shooting 37.9 percent from the field (449-for-1185), with 116 3-pointers, and has knocked down 201 of 309 free throws (65.0 %). … the Auggies are averaging 57.8 ppg, while limiting their opponents to just 57.6 ppg). … The Auggies have scored 70 or more points twice this season — scoring 74 in dropping an 80-74 decision to Carleton on Jan. 25, and netting a season-high 75 in a 75-54 win over St. Scholastica on Jan. 5.
