SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their nonconference match against Buena Vista sitting at 6-7 overall.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s came up empty at the Loras Invitational last weekend, dropping matches to Coe (3-0), Loras (3-1), Monmouth (3-2), and the University of Dubuque (3-0).
• WEARLY BIRDS: The Cardinals’ match against Buena Vista on Tuesday is the seventh in a span of seven days for the Cardinals.
• FAMILIAR FOES: The Cardinals and Beavers squared off against each other three times last season, with the Cardinals going 2-1. SMU beat BVU 3-1 and 3-0 at September tournaments in Pella, Iowa, and Dubuque, Iowa, while Buena Vista turned the tables with a 3-1 victory on SMU’s home court on Oct. 12, 2022.
• SWEEPING UP: Seven of Saint Mary’s 13 matches this season have been decided by 3-0 sweeps. The Cardinals are 3-4 in those seven contests — beating Marian, Lawrence, and Luther, while falling to Elmhurst, UW-Superior, Coe, and the University of Dubuque.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) picked up a team-high 53 kills in SMU’s four matches at the Loras Invitational last weekend, giving the senior a team-high 198 kills through 13 matches. … Kali Olson (New York Mills, Minn.) is sitting second on the team with 111 kills, followed by Jazzy Davis (La Crosse, Wis.) with 96 and Breanna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) with 72. … McNally ended the 2022 season leading the team with 346 kills, leaving her second in the MIAC. … As a team, Saint Mary’s has amassed 558 kills and is hitting .176.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills in 12 of the Cardinals’ 13 matches this season, including three matches of 20 or more kills. … McNally tallied a season-high 24 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2.
• HITTING 20 x 2: Saint Mary’s boasted two players with 20+ kills in its 3-2 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 2 — McNally led the charge with 24 and Olson chipped in 21.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had three players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Olson recorded a career-best 21 kills against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, while Davis tallied a career-high 15 vs. Loras on Sept. 15, and Baker recorded 10 vs. Lawrence on Sept. 1.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) has accounted for 446 of the Cardinals’ 502 assists this season, including a new single-match career high of 53 against Monmouth on Sept. 16. … VanErp has delivered at least 20 helpers in all 13 matches this season, including 30 or more helpers eight times. … VanErp’s 53 assists against Loras on Sept. 16 marked the second time the junior has delivered 50 of more assists, and were the most since Lillian Braun recorded a 53-assist performance against Coe on Sept. 27, 2019.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally, who led the team with 14 double-doubles in 2022, has recorded six kill-dig double-doubles this season, while VanErp has notched the first four set-dig double-doubles of her collegiate career.
• DIGGING IT: Lindsey Rossow (Rochester, Minn.) leads the Cardinals in digs with 198 digs, followed by McNally (139), Alison Wu (Woodbury, Minn. / 100), VanErp (96), and Devann Clemens (Chatfield, Minn.). … Rossow posted a career-high 30 digs against UMN Morris on Sept. 2, Wu posted a career-best 12 digs against Marian on Sept. 1, and VanErp’s 12 digs against Bethany Lutheran last Saturday were also a career-high.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 446 assists, VanErp also leads the team with 24 service aces. Rossow (17), Clemens (15), Olson (13), and Wu (11) have also reached double figures in aces this season. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 98 aces through 13 matches. … Saint Mary’s recorded a season-high eight aces against Marian on Sept. 1.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) was named MIAC Specialty Player of the Week on Sept. 6, after racking up racking up 136 assists, two assist-dig double-doubles and eight service aces in SMU’s four Sugar Loaf Classic matches.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: SMU boasts 558 kills (11.39 kps), 502 assists, 98 aces, 764 digs, and 73 blocks in nine matches. … The Cardinals recorded a single-match season-high 65 kills against Monmouth on Sept. 16, while also setting season-highs in assists (59), and digs (94) against the Scots. … SMU is 7-6 in the first set this season, while going 4-2 in the fourth. … Saint Mary’s has played four matches extended to a fifth set, going 2-2 in those four.
BUENA VISTA BEAVERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Beavers head into Tuesday’s nonconference match against Saint Mary’s sitting at .500 through 12 matches, sporting a 6-6 mark.
• LAST ACTION: Buena Vista posted a 2-1 record in its three matches at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament in Eau Claire, Wis., last weekend — falling to Concordia (3-1), before bouncing back with wins over Illinois Wesleyan (3-1) and UW-Superior (3-1).
• FINALLY HOME: After playing their first 12 matches on the road, Tuesday’s contest against Saint Mary’s is the first of five straight home contests for the Beavers, who will host SMU, Wartburg, St. Catherine, Luther, and Coe, before hitting the road again on Oct. 10 for an American Rivers Conference matchup at Nebraska Wesleyan.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: Tuesday’s contest against Saint Mary’s is the third of six matches against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. BVU has already played Macalester (L, 3-1), Carleton (W, 3-0), and Concordia (L, 3-1), and still has St. Catherine, St. Olaf, and Bethel on its slate.
• ON THE ATTACK: Buena Vista already has two players who have eclipsed the 100-kill mark through 12 matches. Skylar Cole leads the BVU offensive attack with 125 kills, while Rachel Brockney is close behind with 114. Courtney Johnson is sitting third on the team with 74 kills, followed by Hope Vanderlinden (56), Molly McCauley (49), and Kyla Vaughn (48). … Cole has recorded 10 or more kills seven times, including a season-high 22-kill effort against UW-Superior on Sept. 16, while Brockney and Johnson have each posted four matches with 10+ kills. … Brockney owns BVU’s two kill-dig double-doubles.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Jilly Janssen owns 380 of the Beaver’s 464 assists this season, and has 10 or more helpers in all 12 matches. … Janssen has eclipsed 30 assists in a match eight times, and posted a season-high 54 assists against UW-Superior on Sept. 16. … Janssen has posted a team-high eight assist-dig double-doubles this season.
• DIGGING IT: Four players have amassed 100+ digs already this season, led by Molly Bense with 166. Brockney (144), Janssen (110), and McCauley (101) have also joined the 100-dig club. … Bense has put together nine double-digit dig performances this season, including a season-high 19 digs against UW-Superior on Sept. 16. … Brockney owns the team’s single-match season-high with a 22-dig performance against UW-Superior on Sept. 16.
• SERVING UP ACES: Buena Vista boasts five players who own 10 or more service aces through 12 matches. Brockney leads the way with 23 aces, followed by McCauley (17), Janssen (15), Bense (14), and Johnson (14).
• BY THE NUMBERS: Buena Vista heads into its match against Saint Mary’s having won two straight and four of its last five. … As a team, Buena Vista boasts 497 kills (11.56 kps), 464 assists, 89 aces, 726 digs, and 109 blocks. … Buena Vista posted a season-high 61 kills, 60 assists, and 85 digs in its 3-1 win over UW-Superior on Sept. 16. … Four of BVU’s six wins have been 3-0 sweeps. The Beavers are 4-2 in three-set matches and 2-3 in four-setters. BVU fell to UMN Morris in its only five-set match on Sept. 9.
