SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their first road game of the season sporting a 1-0-0 record, thanks to Friday’s 4-0 win over Martin Luther.
• LAST TIME OUT: Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and Aidan Adamek (Missoula, Mont.) each scored two goals in leading the Cardinals to a season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Friday.
• POST-SEASON HONORS: Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) was named honorable-mention All-MIAC a year ago, after leading the league in saves with 119.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 4-0 win on Friday, the Cardinals are now a perfect 8-0-0 all-time against Martin Luther, and have outscored the Knights 30-2 in those eight meetings. … Saint Mary’s five goals in last year’s 5-2 win over the Knights were a season high — and the most goals scored in a game since netting five against MLC in a 5-0 win in 2021.
• HOME SWEET HOME: SMU has picked up three of its last four wins on its home field. The Cardinals were 2-8-0 at home, while going 1-4-3 away from Ochrymowycz Field a year ago.
• CLOSE CALLS: Twenty-two of the Cardinals’ last 32 games have been decided by one goal or less — including nine of SMU’s 17 games in 2022.
• FIT TO BE TIED: The Cardinals’ three ties last season — including a 0-0 deadlock against Concordia on Oct. 1 — are the most since the 2015 season, when Saint Mary’s finished the year with three ties en route to a 6-9-3 overall record. … SMU’s 0-0 tie against Concordia on Oct. 1 was its first 0-0 outcome since battling Saint John’s to a scoreless draw on April 21, 2021.
• OFF AND RUNNING: With their 4-0 victory over Martin Luther on Friday, the Cardinals improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight season-openers, the lone blemish a 3-0 loss to the University of Dubuque a year ago, and a 1-1 tie with St. Olaf during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
• • CAREER GAMES: Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and Aiden Adamek (Missoula, Mont.) each scored their first — and second — collegiate goals in Friday’s 4-0 win over Martin Luther. … Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.), Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.) and Cerim Palislamovic (Jacksonville, Fla.) closed out the year tied atop the team lead in goals with three last season.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with his two goals, Hare also assisted on both of Adamek’s goals, while Barick Makabi (Iowa City, Iowa) collected a helper on one of Hare’s two goals. … Palislamovic
• POINT PRODUCER: P With his two goals and two assists, Hare sits atop the Cardinals’ points lead with six, just two points shy of Palislamovic’s team-leading eight points (3 G, 2 A) from a year ago.
• PLENTY OF PKs: The Cardinals went 4-for-5 in penalty kicks in 2022. Hurley accounted for three of SMU’s four PK goals, while Palislamovic owned the other. … Saint Mary’s two PK goals against Martin Luther on Sept. 10 were the most in a game since Eli Szymanski scored two penalty-kick goals against Edgewood on Sept. 9, 2021. … The last time the Cardinals scored more than four PKs in a season was 2007, when they went 7-for-8. …Hurley’s four PK goals rank second in program history, one shy of Eli Szymanski’s five PKs in 2021.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.), who started 16 of the team’s 18 games in goal for the Cardinals a year ago — compiling a 1.96 goals-against-average and a .793 save percentage — did not have to make a save in his 45 minutes of work against Martin Luther on Friday. Jake Wing (Verona, Wis.) stopped the lone second-half shot he faced against the Knights. … Sessler made 119 saves in 17 total appearances last season — tops in the MIAC.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Sessler’s 12-save shutout against Concordia on Oct. 1, 2022 was his lone shutout of the season and the third of his three-year collegiate career.
• BUSY NIGHTS: Sessler made 10 or more saves four times in 2022, including equaling his career-high of 12 saves three times. … Sessler has stopped 12 shots in a game four times over his collegiate career.
• STRONG START: The Cardinals’ 3-0-2 start last season was their best since opening the 1986 season 4-0-1, and the third-best start in program history. The 1983 Saint Mary’s team went 13 games without a loss to open the season, going 11-0-2.
WISCONSIN LUTHERAN WARRIORS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Wisconsin Lutheran heads into its home opener against Saint Mary’s sitting at 0-1-1 overall, thanks to Friday’s season-opening 1-1 tie against Ripon. … The Warriors closed out the 2022 season with a 10-3-5 overall record, including a 6-2-4 showing in NACC action.
• LAST TIME OUT: Wisconsin Lutheran and Ripon traded goals nine minutes apart early in the second half, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 stalemate Friday in Ripon, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Wisconsin Lutheran was unbeaten in its six home contests last season, going 4-0-2 at home, while sporting a 6-3-3 mark away from Warriors Soccer Field.
• NAILBITERS: Over the last two seasons, Wisconsin Lutheran has now played 12 games decided by two goals or less, going 3-3-6.
• OFFENSIVE LEADER: Ben Meaux netted Wisconsin Lutheran’s lone goal against Ripon, while Toni Bedolia picked up the assist. … Jason Cano enjoyed a banner year in 2022, scoring a team-high 17 goals in 17 games. Cano accounted for 17 of the team’s 31 total goals a year ago, with KJ McNealey, Jr., chipped in eight, while Joseph Raasch and Tony Bedolla chipped in seven and six goals, respectively. No other Knight had more than three goals last season.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Cano was also the team’s leader in assists with nine, followed by Bedolla with five, and Raasch, Joel Migliaccio, and Cameron Jochimsen with three each.
• POINT PRODUCTION: With 17 goals and nine assists, Cano easily closed out last season as WLC’s points leader with 43. McNealey (18), Raasch (17), and Bedolla (17) also closed out the year with more than 10 points.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Puma Galvan was in goal for the Warriors against Ripon Friday evening, surrendering a goal on the lone shot he faced. … Wisconsin Lutheran used five different goalkeepers last season, led by Galvan, who played in 17 games (1117:28 minutes) and compiled a 0.64 goals-against-average and .875 save percentage. … Bryce Beckley (10 GP, 2.10 GAA, .593 save %), Robert Jenewein (2 GP, 0.00 GAA, .000 save %), Sergio Garcia (2 GP, 0.00 GAA, .000 save %), and Cory Ralston (2 GP, 28.65 GAA, .000 save %) also save time between the pipes a year ago. … Galvan stopped 56 of the 64 shots he faced last season, while Beckley made 16 stops. Jenewein, Garcia, and Ralston did not made a save in 2022.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Wisconsin Lutheran outscored its opponents 49-21 a year ago — holding a 23-15 edge in the first half, while owning a 26-6 scoring advantage after halftime. … The Warriors scored three goals or more in nine of their 10 wins — including five or more goals six times. WLC netted a season-high six goals in a 6-2 win over Regent on Sept. 11.
MARIAN SABRES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Sabres head into their nonconference matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 0-1-0, after opening the season with a 1-0 loss to UW-Whitewater Friday in Whitewater, Wis. Marian is coming off a 10-7-2 showing in 2022, including a 7-2-2 mark in NACC play.
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-Whitewater broke a scoreless draw with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation, lifting the Warhawks to a 1-0 win over the Sabres Friday in Whitewater, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Monday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the first of four straight home games for the Sabres, who compiled a 6-3-0 record on their home field a year ago. Marian finished 4-4-2 in its 10 games away from Smith Field last season.
• FINISHING STRONG: After dropping its first three games, and going 6-6-2 through 14 contests, Marian closed out its 2022 regular season winning its last four games. The Sabres’ four-game run came to a screeching halt with a 3-0 loss to Benedictine in the opening round of the NACC Tournament.
• OFFENSIVE LEADER: Giuliano Corazzina closed out the 2022 season scoring a team-high 16 goals, twice as many as Drew Cowden, who finished the year No. 2 in goals with eight. … Corazzina and Cowden accounted for 24 of the team’s 39 goals last season. … Corazzina netted a single-game season-high three goals against Lawrence on Sept. 7, 2022.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Cowden and Logan Holevas shared the team lead in assists with seven, one more than both Corazzina and Max Kauffman. … Corazzina, Kauffman, Holevas, and Cowden all posted two-assist games last season.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Marian finished the 2022 season boasting five players with 10 or more points, led by Corazzina with 38 (16 G, 6 A) and Cowden with 23 (8 G, 7 A). Kauffman (5 G, 6 A, 14 Pts), Israel Duran (4 G, 4 A, 12 Pts), and Holevas (2 G, 7 A, 11 Pts) also reached double figures in points a year ago. … Corazzina recorded a single-game season-high seven-point effort against Lawrence on Sept. 7, 2022, scoring three times and assisting on another.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Adam Jerome, who appeared in 14 games a year ago — compiling a 1.97 goals-against-average and .679 save percentage — stopped four of the five shots he faced in Friday’s 1-0 loss to UW-Whitewater. … Aaron Perez (8 GP, 1.63 GAA, .714 save %) and Joey Sommerfeld (1 GP, 0.00 GAA, .000 save %) also saw time between the pipes last season. … Jerome, who finished with 53 saves last season, stopped a single-game season-high 12 shots against North Central on Sept. 1, 2022.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Marian outscored its opponents 39-35 a year ago. The Sabres were outscored 15-13 in the first half, but held a 26-20 scoring edge after the halftime intermission. … Eight of Marian’s 19 games last season were decided by shutout. The Sabres finished 3-5 in those eight contests. … Marian scored a season-high six goals and accumulated a season-best 16 points in its 6-0 win over Edgewood on Oct. 26. The Sabres delivered a season-high five assists in a game three times. … Marian and its opponents combined for just two penalty kicks last season.
