Volleyball Shutout at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Saint Mary's volleyball team drops their fifth game in a row after they traveled to the city to take on MIAC opponent Augsburg Friday night in the first game of their weekend road contests.

Augsburg took a commanding first set win with a set score of 25-11 after the Cardinals recorded just six kills. Kali Olson had three kills, two of which were back-to-back, when the score was 10-7. The Cardinals could not defend the Auggies attackers and had no answer when they made a 15-2 run to finish a quick first set.

Looking to turn the page, the Cardinals started the game getting three players involved early. Grace King recorded the first kill of the set, Brenna Bruchert and Olson added to the rally followed by a service ace from Devann Clemens for a score of 9-9. The attacking errors built up for the Cardinals as the Auggies outside hitter Bri Van Well tallied seven kills alone in the second set. Two late kills from Bruchert and Olson were not enough to come back, Cardinals dropped set two, 25-15.

The Auggies jumped out to a quick 10 to nothing lead in the Cardinals must win set which forced a timeout. The Cardinals got themselves on the board after an attack error was made on the Auggies and Gretchen Bredberg followed up with a kill. The Cardinals were silenced and had no response and got swept in the fourth game of MIAC play falling winless in conference action.

The Cardinals have a quick turn around and play on the road tomorrow against Carleton for a 5 p.m. start.
