Cardinals Win Big on the Road

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Saint Mary's women's basketball team won a non-conference match up over Northland College on Tuesday, November 19th, winning 85-53.

The Cardinals made a statement to start quarter one putting up a 22-2 run to dominate the Jills. Brianna Nusbaum notched eight early points, Maggie Newhouse and Julia Koch hit early three's to extend the run. The team shot (.42) percent from the three.

Lindsey Lettner and Jaiden Thompson picked up right where the team left off, hot from distance. They made the first two threes into the second quarter. The Cardinals were up 29-9 with five minutes remaining in the first half.

The Jills fought back slightly creating two turnovers and netting the next six points. Those points did not threaten the Cardinals as late layups from Busbaum and Alyssa Coleman put the Cardinals ahead 43-24 at the half.

The Cardinals played an even third quarter with the Jills trading baskets. Saint Mary's went on a bit of a shooting slump, but their inside presence got it done. Kali Olson netted four and Victoria Marial was right behind her.

Despite a three from Northland to open the last quarter, the Cardinals countered with a 21 point rally led by Grace King with eight of the 21 and Rylie Sternquist with six. The Cardinals closed out the impressive quarter to tally another road win.

Freshman Nusbaum led the way with 16 points, shooting (.70) percent from the field, and three steals. Marial and Olson with eight boards.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday for their home opener against Luther College for a 2 p.m. tip off.
