Women’s Hockey Shuts Out Ranked Blugolds

WINONA, Minn. – On Tuesday night, the Saint Mary's women's hockey team took down the No. 10 ranked UW-Eau Claire Blugolds at home and marked a shutout victory, 3-0.

Senior Jenna Kurkowski got the Cardinals on the board at the 11th minute, her first of the season, after a steal and a breakaway shot zipped the puck high in the Blugolds net to take the early lead. The Bluegolds took it to the Cardinals the next five minutes recording the next six shots.

The Cardinals landed a power play chance with five minutes remaining and knew to take advantage of each opportunity with a team like Eau Claire. The Cardinals did just that, netting the second goal in the period with a goal by Reese Heitzman after the puck was passed around by her teammates Teagan Phillips and Kenzie Meland.

The Blugolds opened the second period as the aggressor and took it to the Cardinals and their freshman goalie Magali Fillion. Fillion made her first career start and appearance as a Cardinal for a high stakes game.

At the 13th minute mark, the Cardinals earned their insurance goal with a slick move from Celia Midtbo in front of the net to put the Cardinals ahead 3-0 with still another period remaining.

The Cardinals played top notch defense in the third to secure this top ranked victory and did just that to keep the Blugolds scoreless on their home ice. This game marks the sweep against the Blugolds in the series as the Cardinals beat them earlier in the season, 3-2 at UW-Eau Claire.

Fillion made 19 saves and earned her first career shutout and the only Saint Mary's goalie this season to record one.

The Cardinals return home on Friday to face St. Catherine University for a conference match up at 7 p.m.
