Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Hockey’s Dominate Second Period Lifts Them Past Foresters

WINONA, Minn. – On Saturday afternoon, the Saint Mary's men's hockey team ended the annual Ice Breaker Day on top with a 4-2 win over Lake Forest College.

The Cardinals began the game similar to yesterday's heart breaker as they found themselves down by two goals and quick. The Foresters had control on the Cardinals side the first ten minutes of action and landed a goal at the eighth minute to take a one goal lead.

Five minutes later, they struck again for the second goal. Colin Tushie tried to get their offense going taking a shot on a power play, it was saved.

Looking for a spark, Laudon Poellinger nailed the team's first goal of the game at the ninth minute as Tushie had a diving cross the ice pass to find Poellinger who zips it past the Foresters defender.

The Cardinals caught fire as the goals seemed to come easy for them. At the ninth minute of the period, Marc Fletemeyer snagged the rebound of a missed shot in front of the net and scored to make things even at two's.

The Cardinals were not settling for a tie. Three minutes remained in the second period and senior Gabe Potyk netted his first of the season on a Cardinal power play. Joona Juntunen and Nathan Solis had the assists on the go-ahead goal.

Only seconds remained in the hot period and there was still so much energy for Saint Mary's. Cole Mickel recorded his first career goal as a Cardinal at the 19th minute to give the Cardinals the two goal advantage. Tushie assisted on his second of the game.

The game was in favor of the Cardinals as they came out taking the first six shots at the Foresters goalie. The intensity heightened as both teams found themselves getting in the penalty box and creating power play opportunities.

The Cardinals wanted to secure the win but began playing on their toes to end the period as the Foresters out shot the team by 15 shots.

AJ Ruskowski shutout the team in the second and third period recording 32 saves in the Cardinals first win of the season.

The Cardinals return to the ice Friday, November 8th at 7 p.m. and travel to take on UW-Stout.
