Volleyball Falls in Five

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Saint Mary's volleyball team traveled to the cities for their last road game of the season on Saturday night. The Cardinals took the Pipers to a five set thriller and fell 3 sets to 2.

Neither team could pull ahead to start the match as they traded points until the Cardinals got to the 10th point before the Pipers taking a four-point lead to take the biggest of the set. Gretchen Bredberg and Brenna Bruchert tallied a service ace and a kill to extend the lead. The Cardinals got help from five different hitters as Kali Olson, Alison Wu and Bruchert added to the 14-12 lead. The Pipers went on a seven to nothing run to take their first lead of the set at 18-15. The Cardinals found a way to get back on top as they capitalized on the Pipers errors and Paige Klug added a service ace to keep the rally going as they take the first set of the match.

Looking to keep it rolling, the Cardinals started the second set on a five to nothing run with two aces from Lindsey Rossow and a kill from Klug. The team kept a five point buffer and even grew the lead at 18-11. Hamline called a timeout and their outside hitters became almost unstoppable. The Cardinals found themselves up 21-18 after not being able to stop the kill streak. When it mattered most, the Pipers nailed two service aces and Saint Mary's gave up a service error which resulted in a second set loss.

The teams went back-and-forth before the Cardinals went on a four point rally with contributions from an Olson ace and a Wu kill and creating two attacking errors. The Cardinals were up seven at 14-7 and kept forcing Piper errors as they forced nine total errors and three service aces to secure the third set win.

After forcing a fourth set, Hamline came out on top first instead of the Cardinals at 9-4. Saint Mary's shot themselves in the foot after committing six service errors and eight attack errors that effected the team greatly. Despite the errors, the team never trailed more than four points in the set four loss.

The Cardinals were on the brink of winning their first conference game of the season. Rossow nailed the first service ace to get the team on the board. Olson added back-to-back kills to add to a four point swing up 6-5. The Pipers called a timeout and forced the Cardinals into three errors. The Cardinals were ahead 12-10 but did not expect the Pipers to finish the game on a five point run to take the final match.

Olson lead the team in kills at 22, Clemens assisted on 24 attempts, and Rossow had a season high five service aces.

The Cardinals return home on Wednesday, November 6th for a 7 p.m. match against Saint Benedict.
