NORTHFIELD, Minn. – On a windy Thursday afternoon, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team defeated the No. 2 seed Carleton Knights in the MIAC Semifinals to move onto the Championship on Saturday for the first trip in school history
Â
The Cardinals trip to the championship breaks the Knights record of three consecutive trips.
Â
The Knights held possession of the ball a majority of the first half of action. The Cardinals back line held their own and cleared out five first half corner kicks and seven shots.
Â
Only two true looks on goal came from
Samantha Munson and
Dakota Leonard at the 15
th minute and at the 29
th minute.
Â
Both teams were held scoreless at the half.
Â
The Cardinals had nothing to lose going into the second half of the game. Trying to set the tone,
Lauren Ashe took the first shot of the half for either team, resulting in a save at the 51
st minute.
Â
Adrenaline was running, Ashe served a ball into the box where
Hannah Bradley occupied the space and made her move off the Knights miscommunication and drilled a left footed shot to the back of the empty net.
Â
The Cardinals took the one goal lead at the 63
rd minute.
Â
After the goal, there were no real chances for either team as they quieted down. The Cardinals packed in their defense in attempt to secure the close win.
Â
The Knights had three late chances to tie with a free kick outside of the box, a corner kick, and a shot just right of the goal post.
Â
The Cardinals played the ball smart to end the game kicking it out and wide to drain the clock and it worked. The Cardinals will move onto their historic MIAC Championship game and will face St. Catherine on Saturday, November 9
th att 1 p.m. in St. Paul.
