STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Saint Mary's men's hockey team finished their weekend road trips in Wisconsin on Saturday night facing the 11
th ranked UW-Stevens Point Pointers. The Cardinals fell in a high scoring match up 7-4.
The Cardinals came out as the aggressor in the non-conference game as they struck the first three attempts on goal. The Pointers landed a power play at the eighth minute which resulted in a goal for a one point deficit.
The Cardinals responded with a goal of their own off a stolen puck and
Blake Green took a straight on shot that
Marc Fletemeyer gathered and netted to tie the game at one's. The teams went silent to finish the game.
Saint Mary's took half the amount of shots as Stevens Point with 10 in period one.
The Pointers jumped out to a 2-1 lead just two minutes into the start the second period and took the next five shots at Cardinal goal keeper,
AJ Ruskowski. The one goal lead was short lived as sophomore
Carter Newpower records his first goal of the season to tie the game once more.
Alex Cannon took a breakaway shot that was deflected and found the stick of Newpower for the tie. Green forced the turnover and made the pass to Cannon.
At the 10
th minute,
Cole Mickel looked to take the lead with a shot on a power play of their own, it was saved. The Pointers netted the third goal for the team at the 13
th minute to bring the lead back to one.
The Pointers applied pressure in the remaining minutes of the second period and scored one more goal to extend the lead to two before the end of the period. The final seconds of action were hectic.
Newpower netted his second goal of the game and season with less than a minute to go but was waved off until the next whistle blew the action dead. The Pointers scored during the uncertain time and the refs called it off and counted Newpowers goal on the other end to cut the lead in half 4-3.
In less than 30 seconds into the final period, the Pointers nail a fifth goal to bounce back to a two goal lead. The Cardinals have been in this position before and found themselves on a power play and
Colin Tushie capitalized with a goal to get within one.
Joona Juntunen and
Nathan Solis broke down the Pointer defenders and sliced a puck up the middle for a straight away shot for Tushie.
Any hopes of getting the game back within one goal were crushed when the Pointers scored two more goals to stretch the lead 7-4. Two late chances from Potyk and Fletemeyer were not enough as the Cardinals fell in their second road match.
The Cardinals return to the ice Friday, November 15
th in their first conference game at Hamline at 7 p.m.
