WINONA, Minn. —Â
Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) has drained a lot of 3-pointers during his four-year career with the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team.
Â
In fact, the Cardinal senior is the program record-holder with 191 3-pointers heading into Saint Mary's final two games of the regular season this week.
Â
In other words, Ziegler knocking down 3-pointers on a regular basis comes as no surprise.
Â
Ziegler's long-distance performance in Saint Mary's two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories last week certainly turned a few heads — and earned the senior guard some much-deserved accolades.
Â
Ziegler delivered a whopping 13 3-pointers — including eight against Augsburg last Wednesday — and averaged 23.5 points-per-game in back-to-back victories over St Scholastica and Augsburg, earning him MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Ziegler kicked off his week equaling his then-season-high with five 3-pointers, going 5-for-12 from beyond the arc en route to a 15-point effort in a 73-65 win over St. Scholastica last Monday.
Â
That proved to be just the appetizer, however, as Ziegler once again displayed his Midas Touch from beyond the 3-point two nights later — this time raining in eight 3s — including six in the first half — finishing 8 of 18 from 3-point land in equaling his career-high with 32 points in SMU's 89-80 victory over Augsburg.
Â
For the week, Ziegler — SMU's all-time leader in 3-points with 191 — averaed 23.5 ppg, finishing 16-for-35 from the field, including 13-for-30 from downtown, and hitting on 2 of 3 free throws.
Â
Ziegler and the Cardinals (7-11 MIAC, 8-15 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Gustavus in their final home game of the season, a 7 p.m. tip-off at the SMU Gym.
