Cardinals Start the Season Strong

The Cardinal Women’s Soccer team held onto its lead against the Cougars to win the first game of the season.

WINONA, Minn. – The Cardinal Women's Soccer team held onto its one goal lead over the Cougars to win the first game of the season.

The Cardinals controlled the ball on the Cougars side a majority of the first half resulting in a goal. At the 8 min mark, a well struck ball from straight on by Ella Lahart floated over the Cougars goalie. The goal was assisted by Dakota Leonard.

Unable to hold the lead for long, the Cougars responded at the 33 min mark of the first half off a set piece on the right side of the box.

Coming out hot, the Cardinals set the tone in the second half with a goal by Lauryn Skoruppa at the 51 min mark to take back the lead. Brooklyn McKinney had the assist.

Wasting no time, Samantha Munson found the back of the net to stretch the lead to two at the 59 min mark.

The Cardinals were in control the rest of the way to win their first game of the year.

The Cardinals return to action Sept. 1 against Wartburg for a 3 p.m start.
