ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team (11-5) defeated Saint Benedict (9-5-3) 3-2 on the road Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals will be coming home with a sweet feeling of victory after completing the conference sweep.
Allie Urlaub,
Sidney Polzin, and
Celia Midtbo stood out for the Cardinals with a goal each in the first period showcasing her offensive contributions. Â
The Cardinals took an early lead in the first period with a goal by Midtbo at 14:47, assisted by
Taverie Sherner and
Leah Parker. The team extended their lead with a goal from Polzin at 04:40 keeping the offensive pressure alive. Urlaub then secured the third goal at 03:18, with assists credited to
Jenna Kurkowski and
Anna Braun.Â
The period concluded with the Cardinals holding a 3-0 lead over Saint Benedict, supported by strong defensive play from goalie
Magali Fillion, who made several key saves.
The Cardinals tried to keep their foot on the gas in the second period and hold onto the three goal lead but the Bennies scored at 16:40 marking the only goal of the period.
In the third period, the Cardinals had several missed opportunities to extend their lead, with
Alexa March taking multiple shots on goal that were saved by Saint Benedict's goalie. Despite a strong defensive effort, including key saves by Fillion, Saint Benedict managed to score at 1:12 remaining in the period, narrowing the lead to 3-2.Â
The Cardinals maintained their early advantage until the end of the game, securing a victory with a final score of 3-2.
Fillion ended the game making 34 saves.
The Cardinals are back in action Friday, January 31st hosting the College of St. Scholastica for the weekend.
