WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (8-3-2, 2-2-2) came up short in a 2-1 loss to St. Catherine University (10-2-0, 5-1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field, despite registering nine total shots.
The matchup served as a rematch of last season's MIAC Championship game on November 9, where the Cardinals were defeated 3-1 at St. Catherine.
The first half opened with both teams battling for control, as Cardinals goalkeeper Anna Peckosh came up with key saves to keep the game scoreless early on. St. Catherine broke through in the 33rd minute when the Wildcats scored off a give and go.
The Cardinals answered just six minutes later, as Samantha Munson found the back of the net for the seventh time this season with help from Lauryn Skoruppa, tying the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Saint Mary's came out strong to start the second half, with Munson and Sarah Ringland each getting early chances. But in the 66th minute, Briana Henaman put St. Catherine back in front with a goal that shifted the momentum their way.
The Cardinals kept pushing, with Lauren Fields and Skoruppa both getting looks at goal, but they couldn't convert.
Skoruppa's chance was spoiled as her goal was waved off as offside and would have tied the game with fifteen minutes remaining.
Peckosh continued to anchor the defense with a big save in the 79th minute, helping keep the game within reach. Despite a strong effort, Saint Mary's couldn't find the equalizer and fell 2-1.
Peckosh finished with five saves, including four in the first half.
The Cardinals, missing a few players from the lineup, will look to bounce back on Tuesday, October 14, when they host St. Olaf at 4:00 p.m.
