MEQUON, Wis. — A third-period breakthrough from Sophia Paduano lifted the Saint Mary's women's hockey team (1-1) to a 1-0 victory over Concordia Wisconsin (1-1) on Saturday, wrapping up the weekend on a winning note.
After two scoreless periods filled with back-and-forth chances, Paduano finally broke through at the 16:28 mark of the third, burying a feed from Kenzie Meland and Reese Heitzman to give the Cardinals the edge they'd been pressing for all game.
Saint Mary's controlled much of the play, outshooting the Falcons 28-13 and keeping steady offensive pressure throughout. Goaltender Magali Fillion was perfect between the pipes, turning aside all 13 shots she faced to secure the shutout.
The Cardinals defense stood tall on multiple penalty kills, including one late in the third, while Keeley Callander anchored the faceoff circle with a 56 percent win rate.
With the win, the Cardinals closed out their weekend on the road.
The team looks to take a week off before opening conference action at Hamline on November 14, for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop.
