Cardinals Close Out Season Against Gustavus

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's men's soccer team (4-11-3, 1-8-1) wrapped up its 2025 season on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Gustavus Adolphus (13-4-1, 6-3-1) at Ochrymowycz Field.

Despite creating quality chances and outshooting the Gusties on goal, the Cardinals couldn't break through offensively. Gustavus struck for three first-half goals to take control early, while Saint Mary's battled through adversity — including a late red card that left them a man down for the final 15 minutes.

Goalkeeper Ryan Horlock kept busy in net, turning away seven shots on 18 total attempts faced. Thomas Laaksonen led the Cardinals attack with three shots, including two on goal, while Cohan Hare added another shot on target.

The Cardinals opened with energy, pushing the pace in the early minutes as Laaksonen fired a promising chance in the sixth minute that was turned aside by Gustavus' keeper. However, the Gusties found their rhythm midway through the first half, scoring in the 21st, 32nd, and 39th minutes to build a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

Saint Mary's tightened up defensively in the second half, with Horlock making several strong saves to keep Gustavus off the board the rest of the way. Playing a man down, the Cardinals continued to battle to the final whistle, holding the Gusties scoreless in the final frame.

With the result, Saint Mary's closes the 2025 campaign with a hard-fought effort against one of the MIAC's top teams.
