WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team (2-4-0, 1-3-0) set the tone early on Saturday, controlling possession and generating steady offensive pressure in a tight matchup against St. Catherine (6-2-0, 3-1-0) at the SMU Ice Arena but ultimately fell in overtime, surrendering the game-winner with just six seconds left.
The Cardinals came out strong, winning the opening faceoff and creating immediate power-play chances, with Celia Midtbo and Kenzie Meland testing Wildcats goaltender Addie Oettinger. Saint Mary's produced quality looks throughout the first period from Reese Heitzman, Destinee Hoffmann, and Sophia Paduano while goaltender Celeste Rimstad kept things even with several key stops.
Rimstad kept the Cardinals even turning away back-to-back Wildcat opportunities to keep the game scoreless heading into the third.
The Cardinals opened the third period with another surge of pressure, firing early shots from Midtbo, Paduano, and Meland. Rimstad came up big again during a late St. Catherine power play, anchoring a strong penalty kill to send the team to overtime for the first time this season.
Despite outshooting the Wildcats and dictating play for much of the afternoon, Saint Mary's couldn't capitalize and the game slipped away in overtime, with St. Catherine netted the winner in the final six seconds.
The Cardinals will look to get back on the ice after Thanksgiving, hosting Concordia (MN) for the weekend and the next game on Friday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m.
