Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Fast Start Fades as MSOE Outlasts Saint Mary's, 6–4

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — In their lone game of the week, the Saint Mary's men's hockey team (4-2-1) came out firing on Tuesday night, but a big second period by Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) (6-2-1) proved to be the turning point in a 6–4 non-conference loss.

The Cardinals struck first and built early momentum.

Carter Newpower opened the scoring midway through the first, burying a feed from Jack Campion to give Saint Mary's the lead. Minutes later, the Cardinals doubled it during a power play, with Colin Tushie hammering home a shot set up by Paden Hicks and Joona Juntunen

MSOE cut the deficit late in the period with a power-play goal, but Saint Mary's still carried a 2–1 advantage into the first intermission.

The second period, however, shifted the entire game. MSOE tied things up just over a minute in, then added two more goals, including a power-play tally, to grab control. Saint Mary's had chances to respond, but penalties and missed opportunities stalled their rhythm, and the Cardinals entered the third trailing 4–2.

Saint Mary's didn't go quietly.

The Cardinals stormed back with two power-play goals early in the third, first from Tushie, who scored his second of the night, and then from Juntunen, who made it a one-goal game with 2:29 left.

But MSOE answered with an empty-netter in the final minutes to put the game out of reach.

Tushie led the way with two power-play goals and four shots. Campion chipped in two assists and dominated the dot with 14 faceoff wins. Juntunen added a goal and an assist, while Newpower finished with one goal on his lone shot.

Saint Mary's converted three of its seven power-play chances but couldn't overcome MSOE's steady scoring across all three periods.

The Cardinals will now enjoy a break before hitting the ice again at Concordia (MN) on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6.
