WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's men's hockey team (2-1-1) put up a strong fight against No. 15 UW–Stevens Point (2-2-0) on Saturday night, but the Pointers proved too much to handle, handing the Cardinals their first loss of the season 4–1.
Freshman Ben Polomsky made the night memorable nonetheless, scoring his first collegiate goal midway through the opening period to even the score at 1–1. Polomsky buried the puck at 6:16 off assists from Blake Arneson and Kyle Arias, marking a milestone moment early in his Cardinal career.
Goaltender Logan Abric kept Saint Mary's within striking distance, turning aside 29 shots on the night, including several key stops during a busy second period.
The nationally ranked Pointers, however, managed to tack on goals in each frame to pull away.
Despite the final score, the Cardinals refused to back down, outshooting the Pointers 12–8 in the third period and generating multiple quality looks from Paden Hicks and Cooper Smyl. Arias also impressed in the faceoff circle, winning 80 percent of his draws.
An empty-netter in the closing minutes sealed the win for UW–Stevens Point, despite the Cardinals third-period push.
The Cardinals will be back in action kicking off conference at home Friday, November 14 hosting Hamline for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
