Saint Mary’s Drops Wednesday Matchup at Hamline

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Saint Mary's (0-10, 0-3) couldn't overcome a tough night on the road Wednesday, falling 79–52 to Hamline (7-2, 2-1) at Hutton Arena. Turnovers proved costly for the Cardinals, who gave the ball away 20 times, leading to 26 points for the Pipers.

Saint Mary's opened the game with some early momentum as Sawyer Markham finished at the rim just a minute in off a pass from Khai Branham. The teams traded baskets through the opening stretch, including a John Palmer three at 12:05 that kept the Cardinals within reach.

But as the half wore on, turnovers and cold shooting caught up with Saint Mary's. Despite knocking down 10 of 23 shots, the Cardinals' nine first-half turnovers helped Hamline pull ahead 48–30 at the break.

The Cardinals showed some fight coming out of halftime. Jackson Harvey knocked down a jumper and Reid Weckwerth followed with a three to cut the deficit to 15 less than three minutes into the half.

Markham added a three-point play moments later to keep the energy up. But Hamline answered with a run of fast-break points that widened the gap again, and Saint Mary's couldn't string together enough stops to make another push.

Late buckets from Mitchell Hill and Josh Wohlers weren't enough to swing momentum, and the Pipers closed out the 79–52 win.

Harvey paced the Cardinals with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added three blocks. Markham followed with 12 points and four rebounds, going 6-for-7 from the free throw line.

The Cardinals will be back in a little over a week in action to host UW-Stout on Saturday, Dec. 20 for a 1:00 p.m. tip off.
