WINONA, Minn. - The Saint Mary's men's hockey team (8-10-1) faced a challenging road matchup against the No. 11-ranked St. Scholastica Saints (11-9-1) on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-1.
Liam McInnis led the Cardinals with a power-play goal, contributing one goal and one point for his third goal of the season.
The first period of the game ended with no goals scored by either team. The Cardinals, led by goalie
AJ Ruskowski, successfully defended against multiple shots from the Saints, with Ruskowski making saves on several missed attempts.
St. Scholastica controlled the second period, including several missed shots and a blocked attempt by Cardinals players. The Saints capitalized scoring a power-play goal at 5:19 marking the first goal of the game.Â
The Cardinals later had a power play opportunity following a slashing penalty on the Saints at 3:32, but they were unable to convert, leaving the score at 1-0 in favor of St. Scholastica at the end of the period.
It was all St. Scholastica's in the final period of action. The Saints nailed two back-to-back goals to take a three-goal lead with 15 minutes remaining. The Cardinals responded with a power-play goal by McInnis at 08:49, assisted by
Warner Young and
Ryan Berglund, but St. Scholastica extended their lead with another goal at 03:41.Â
The final goal of the period came at 02:50 for St. Scholastica, concluding a productive period for the home team with a 5-1 victory over the Cardinals.
The team will prepare to take on Bethel University on Friday, February 7th at 7 p.m. in their next game.
