WINONA, Minn. - The Cardinal women's hockey team (13-5) completed a conference sweep against the St. Scholastica Saints (4-15) this weekend, securing a 3-1 victory on Saturday.
Allie Urlaub was a standout for the Cardinals, scoring two goals in the win—her first multi-goal game of the season.
Taverie Sherner also played a crucial role, netting the game-winning goal and helping drive the team's success in the close contest.
The Cardinals started the first period strong, with Urlaub winning the initial faceoff and the team maintaining possession with multiple faceoff victories throughout. Even though the Cardinals shot a high volume of shots, the team was held scoreless ending the first period 0-0.
The Cardinals capitalized on a power play opportunity with Urlaub scoring the period's only goal at 11:46, assisted by
Reese Heitzman and
Celia Midtbo, giving them a 1-0 lead over St. Scholastica by the end of the period.
At 12:09 in the third period
Taverie Sherner netted a goal off the Urlaub face off win! Despite a penalty on Midtbo and a subsequent power play goal by the Saints, the Cardinals managed to seal the game with an empty-net goal by
Allie Urlaub with only seconds remaining.
They would go on to secure the 3-1 win.
The Cardinals have a quick turnaround, hosting the nation's top-ranked team, UW-River Falls, on Tuesday, February 4th at 7 p.m.
