Cardinals Secure Shutout in Home Finale

WINONA, Minn. - In their final home game of the season, the Saint Mary's men's hockey team (11-12-1) delivered a standout performance, securing a 4-0 shutout victory over the Augsburg Auggies (7-16-1) on Friday night.

Four different Cardinals found the net in the home finale: Cooper Smyl, Carter Newpower, Gabe Potyk, and Warner Young.

Saint Mary's goaltender AJ Ruskowski kept Augsburg scoreless, registering 30 saves over the 60-minute contest. 

The Cardinals took an early lead in the first period with Smyl scoring at 13:30, assisted by Alex Cannon and Marc Fletemeyer, marking Smyl's fourth goal of the season.
They maintained offensive pressure with several shots, including attempts by Markus Andrews and Ryan Berglund, though many were wide or saved by Augsburg's goalie. Ruskowski made multiple saves to keep Augsburg scoreless after the first.

At 10:52 in the second period, Newpower capitalized on an assist from Joona Juntunen and Fletemeyer to score his seventh goal of the season, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of the Cardinals. 

Warner Young extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal late in the period at 00:50, assisted by Cole Mickel and Colin Tushie, further demonstrating their offensive dominance in the period.

The third period saw the Cardinals maintain control with an impressive faceoff performance, winning several crucial matchups. Potyk scored a short-handed, empty-net goal at 17:35, assisted by Tushie, securing a 4-0 win. 

Ruskowski contributed defensively with several saves throughout the period, effectively keeping Augsburg scoreless to record his second shutout of the season!

The Cardinals will head to the city tomorrow to take on the Auggies one last time at 7:00 p.m.
