WINONA, Minn. - The Saint Mary's women's hockey team (15-10) experienced an intense Senior Day as they hosted No. 5 ranked Augsburg Auggies (21-3-1), hoping to create some magic. The Cardinals narrowly lost 3-2, ending the regular season.
Today's loss does not impact the women's playoff chances! The Cardinals, as the fourth seed, will host the first game of the quarterfinals on Wednesday, February 26th. They will face the fifth seed, which will be determined later today, along with the game time.
Magali Fillion, in goal for the Cardinals, made multiple saves against Augsburg's attempts, including saves at 13:47 and 06:13, ensuring the Auggies shots remained unsuccessful.
Despite several offensive efforts from players like
Teagan Phillips and
Allie Urlaub, all shots on goal were either saved or went wide, reflecting a strong defensive showing from both teams to go scoreless in the first period.
The Auggies struck first in the second period to take a 1-0 lead in the second period. A critical play by
Reese Heitzman nailed an unassisted goal at 5:30 to tie the game at 1-1. Augsburg responded with a goal to regain the lead, but the Cardinals capitalized on a power play in the final seconds, as
Sophia Paduano scored with 13 seconds remaining to end the period tied at 2-2.
The Cardinals began the third period with strong faceoff performances, winning multiple faceoffs early, including two within the first 20 seconds by
Allie Urlaub. Despite a penalty on
Sidney Polzin, the Cardinals successfully killed the power play, with
Magali Fillion making key saves. Augsburg was able to take the lead with a goal at 14:08 which proved to be the game-winner.
The team battled with the top team in the nation and was right there the whole game. The team still has a lot to look forward to!

There will not be cash sales at any venue; however, spectators can purchase tickets using a mobile device, including while at the venue.
