WINONA, Minn. - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team (6-16) hosted the St. Scholastica Saints (8-14) in their second match up in the season. The Cardinals fell short in the fast paced game to the Saints 77-68.
Jemari Moore and
Breyton Buysman led the Cardinals with 20 points each accumulating 40 total team points. Moore shot 8-of-13 from the field, and added nine rebounds. Buysman hit 6-of-11 shots and converted seven of nine free throws. He also contributed four assists and nine rebounds.Â
Sawyer Markham was a defensive presence with two steals and added five points and three assists.
Jackson Harvey made an impact with two blocks and contributed six points, while
Khai Branham led the team in rebounds with eight and scored five points.
The first half was highly competitive with both teams exchanging leads five times. The Cardinals pushed forward with a series of successful plays from Moore, who contributed with a tip-in and free throws for an and-one, and
Jonah Ogunsanya's three-pointer at 14:00 helped close the gap 11-7.
Despite the Cardinals efforts, the Saints maintained a slight edge, finishing the half leading 33-28, aided by a late three-pointer and layup.
The Saints extended their lead early with two successful free throws at the 18:19 mark, which contributed to a nine-point lead and eventually a 15-point lead at 47-32. The Cardinals fought back with a Buysman three-pointer and Moore layup, narrowing the gap slightly.
Moore went on a personal five point at the end of the game but it was not enough as the Cardinals fell 77-68 and were swept in conference to the Saints.
The team is back in action on home court Wednesday, February 12th for a 7:30 p.m. tip off against the Augsburg Auggies.
