Baseball Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader

WINTER HAVEN, Florida – The Saint Mary's baseball team (1-1) opened its spring break trip in Florida and season opener with a doubleheader split against Illinois College. The Cardinals lost the first game 6-2 but responded with a dominant 9-0 victory in game two.

GAME ONE

In the first game of the season, the scoring started early for the Blueboys after a home run in the opening inning. The Cardinals responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame after Ryan Csida and Alex Hanneman were walked and Brinton Anderson singles on a line drive to center fielder bringing Csida home.

Illinois College quickly regained control in the second and seventh inning, adding two more runs in the second and never looking back after three given up in the final inning.

GAME TWO

In the bounce back win, Riley Bauman recorded three hits, including a double and a triple, while driving in two runs and scoring twice. Hanneman hit his first home run of the season, with one RBI, and two runs scored. On the mound, Andrew Milner was effective as a starter, pitching two innings without allowing a run and striking out three batters.

In the first inning, the Cardinals quickly established a lead with a series of effective plays. Csida singled and stole second, followed by Bauman's triple that brought home Csida and Hanneman, giving the Cardinals an early 2-0 advantage. An error by IC Blueboys' first baseman allowed Bauman to score, extending the lead to 3-0 by the inning's end.

Bauman and Anderson both singled in the third inning to extend the lead.

In the fourth inning, the Cardinals added two more runs, leaving the score at 7-0.

The seventh inning sealed the game for the Cardinals with two final runs. Niko Niemela singled and advanced on a walk, setting up Daniel Sherman, whose single drove in another run. Josh Costello's ground out brought in another, concluding the game with the Cardinals securing a decisive 9-0 victory over the Blueboys.

The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow, facing Buena Vista at 9:00 a.m. EST for their sole game of the day.
