Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cardinals Defeated in MIAC Semis After a Record-Setting Game

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Just before midnight, in what is thought to be the longest game in NCAA Division III women's hockey history—lasting four overtime periods and 128:06 of game time—the Saint Mary's women's hockey team (16-11) was defeated by the top-seeded Augsburg Auggies (22-3-1) in the MIAC Semifinal, with a final score of 3-2.

Reese Heitzman and Celia Midtbo each scored in their outting. Cardinals goalkeeper Celeste Rimstad delivered an outstanding performance, recording a career-high 59 saves in the game.
The Cardinals took the lead in the first period with Heitzman's goal at 12:47, assisted by Sophia Paduano and Midtbo. Rimstad was instrumental in maintaining the lead, saving multiple attempts from Augsburg resulting in a period score of 1-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

It was the first lead the Cardinals took over the Auggies all season.

The Auggies tied the game 1-1 before the Cardinals would capitalize on a power play at 10:34 with a goal by Midtbo, assisted by Kas Kingston and Sophia Paduano. The period concluded with the Cardinals maintaining a 2-1 lead, aided by strong defensive efforts, including key saves by Rimstad.

Augsburg secured an early goal at 16:03 to tie the big game. Despite consistent defensive efforts and multiple saves by Rimstad, the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, ending the period scoreless heading into the first overtime period.

The teams struggled to convert opportunities into goals during the first overtime period, leaving both sides scoreless after not just one, two, or three overtimes.

As the Cardinals neared the longest game in DIII history, both teams began to tire. Rimstad made several crucial saves during the fourth overtime period, including back-to-back stops at 16:47 and 16:42. Despite the Cardinals' offensive efforts and outshooting the Auggies in overtime, a goal by Augsburg at 11:54 ended the match with a 3-2 victory for the Auggies.

The team's season ends here, unless they hear their name called during the DIII women's hockey selection show on Sunday, March 9th.
