WINONA, Minn. - Let's hear it for the second-longest streak for your Saint Mary's softball team (29-3) at 19 games! After another big sweep beating Concordia College (16-12) 10-2 and 6-1, this team's now 14-0 in the conference—and looking more and more like something special.
GAME ONE
You could not have pictured a more all around game for the Cardinals.Â
Makayla Steffes showed out on both sides of the ball! She went the distance in the circle with eight strikeouts over six innings, giving up just four hits and two earned runs. At the plate, she kept the momentum going with a homer, two hits, and three runs scored.
Heather Nordlund also showcased her power by hitting a home run, driving in two runs, and collecting two hits.
Brianna Nusbaum made her presence felt on the base paths with her speed, successfully stealing two bases.
In the first inning, the Cardinals took an early lead as
Megan McGinnis scored on a single by
Naleyah Bork, making it 1–0. In the second inning, McGinnis further extended the lead by driving in Steffes with a single, bringing the score to 2–0.Â
The third inning saw Nordlund add to the Cardinals tally with a solo home run.
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals capitalized on the Cobbers error, with
Karli Zetah and Steffes scoring runs to increase their advantage to 5–0.
Steffes hit a solo home run in the sixth and final inning followed by
Breonna Methner's RBI single and
Samya Brown's two-RBI double, securing the quick win 10–2 that was backed by 14 hits.
GAME TWO
Kenzie Gatz was dominant on the mound, pitching a complete game with five strikeouts and allowing just one earned run over seven innings. In the field, she also contributed two assists.Â
Abbie Stigler recorded two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base in her three at-bats, adding to the team's offensive performance.
Saint Mary's secured a 6–1 victory over Concordia with a strong start in the second inning.Â
After a quiet first inning for both teams, the Cardinals broke through as Bork drew a walk, followed by
Brianna Nusbaum who pinch-ran and stole second. Ciero's double brought Nusbaum home, and Stigler's single drove in Ciero, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
The momentum continued in the third inning when Steffes singled and McGinnis was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on a double steal, setting up Berg's groundout RBI and Nordlund's double, extending the lead to 4-0.
To keep things rolling, Stigler and Zetah initiated the fourth inning with bunt singles ultimately leading and securing win 19 in a row at 6-1.
The Cardinals are ready to keep the momentum going at home this Saturday, April 19th, with a doubleheader showdown against Saint Benedict starting at 1:00 p.m.
