ST. PETER, Minn. - They've done it again! The No. 22 Saint Mary's softball team (21-3) keeps their winning streak alive and continues to dominate the conference. On the road, they defeated Gustavus Adolphus (12-10) today with a mighty sweep, winning 2-0 and 5-2.
GAME ONE
Guess who delivered another complete game shutout? In her seven innings on the mound,
Makayla Steffes allowed just three hits and struck out four batters, securing a 10-2 record.Â
Zoe Fink, appearing as a pinch hitter, recorded a crucial RBI single in her lone at-bat, adding depth to the lineup.
Saint Mary's opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Steffes singled to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice by
Megan McGinnis.
Heather Nordlund then delivered a single to right field, bringing Steffes home for the 1-0 lead.Â
The Gusties were unable to respond, as their side was retired in order, maintaining the Cardinals advantage after the fourth.
In the fifth inning,
Allison Ciero started with a bunt single and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Zoe Fink, appearing as a pinch hitter, recorded a crucial RBI single in her lone at-bat, executed a bunt single that allowed Ciero to score, extending the lead to 2-0.Â
The Cardinals maintained their defensive effectiveness throughout the game, the Gusties were unable to score in the final innings.Â
GAME TWO
Kenzie Gatz has an impressive performance, scoring two runs and hitting safely in all three of her at-bats, while also driving in one run. She was also solid in the circle, pitching six innings and allowing just two earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second inning when
Naleyah Bork doubled and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Abbie Stigler. The Gusties responded in the third inning with a run of their own to tie the game 1-1.Â
Saint Mary's regained the lead in the fifth inning after Gatz singled and later scored on an error, bringing the score to 2-1.
The seventh inning was pivotal for the Cardinals, beginning with Stigler's double down left field and subsequent run scored on Gatz's RBI single. Steffes followed with a double to score Gatz, and McGinnis singled to bring in Steffes, extending the lead to 5-1 and executed on bringing their teammates home.Â
Gustavus managed to add a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Saint Mary's secured the win with a final score of 5-2.
The Cardinals will take some time to rest before preparing to host UW-La Crosse tomorrow, April 9th, for their final non-conference doubleheader, starting at 3:00 p.m.
