WINONA, Minn. - There's plenty of new energy surrounding the Saint Mary's men's soccer team this season, and we're excited to get things started. With a new coach, a fresh team, upgraded turf, and a brand-new season ahead, the team is gearing up for their first match in just over a week.
"New turf and a new position, I'm ready for a great season ahead," said Head Coach Leo Barbosa, heading into his first season at the helm. "I'm fortunate to have phenomenal people by my side, and I truly believe we can achieve great things together."
The team kicks off the season on Friday, August 29, in Chicago with a weekend of games—first against the Illinois Institute of Technology, followed by a matchup with Lake Forest College on Saturday, August 30th.
They'll return home to host their home opener on Wednesday, September 3rd, against Ripon.
Two dates that stick out are Saturday, September 6th for alumni day at 4:00 p.m. and then celebrating the Cardinals five seniors that will be celebrated on senior day, Saturday, September 13th at 4:00 p.m.
Last season, the team posted an 8-9-1 record and opened with their best start since 1981, going on a five-game winning streak. This year, they're aiming to build on that momentum and create some magic of their own.
"Together, we're not only aiming for a winning season but also creating an environment that we can all be proud of and enjoy."
There are plenty of chances to catch the Cardinals in action this season with 11 home games! The last home game will be Saturday, November 1st against Gustavus at 1:00 p.m.
One of the team's biggest strengths this season will be its returning players. Senior Cohan Hare, who led the team with eight goals last year, is back to lead the attack. On the defensive end, Josh Pannkuk and Caleb Gilbert return as a strong duo after starting nearly every game as freshmen.
"We have a talented freshman class joining an already skilled group that showed great promise last season."
It is shaping up to be a special season!
