CHICAGO, Ill. - After falling 2-1 on the road to Illinois Institute of Technology, the Saint Mary's men's soccer team will look to overcome first-game jitters and quickly refocus as they pursue their opening win of the season.
Just 14 seconds into the match, Saint Mary's took an early lead with a goal from Francesco Cardone, assisted by Rojan Monger. It was quite the opening first goal of the season.
Cohan Hare had multiple shots on target throughout the half, all saved by Illinois Tech goalkeeper Colin Thomas. The Scarlet Hawks leveled the score at 1-1 just before halftime with a goal right at the 45th minute, concluding the first half with both teams tied.
Five minutes into the second half, the Scarlet Hawks converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute to take their first lead of the game.
The Cardinals responded with offensive pressure.
Despite multiple attempts, including shots from Caleb Gilbert and Thomas Laaksonen, Illinois Tech's defense, led by Thomas, maintained their lead.
The Scarlet Hawks continued to apply pressure with several shots on goal, but Saint Mary's goalkeeper Ryan Horlock made crucial saves to keep the score close.
The half concluded with Illinois Tech holding onto their 2-1 lead despite the Cardinals efforts to equalize.
Saint Mary's managed 11 shots with eight on goal, while Illinois Tech had 14 shots with seven on target. It was an extremely equal game.
The Cardinals will have to wipe their memory as they gear up for another game in Illinois tomorrow at Lake Forest College for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
