WINONA, Minn. - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team (0-1) fought hard on Saturday but came up short in a 5-2 loss to Bethany Lutheran (1-0) for the team's season and home opener.
Despite the loss, the team showed resilience across both singles and doubles play, with several tightly contested matches.
Due to a default at No. 3 doubles, Saint Mary's was able to secure the only doubles win.
In singles, the Cardinals found more success.
Kanyon Hicks picked up a point for Saint Mary's, his first as a Cardinals with a strong win at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Owen Donder also delivered a win by default at the No. 6 position, giving the team their two total points on the day.
The rest of the lineup saw some hard-fought battles.
It was overall a good showing to open the season and the Cardinals showed plenty of grit, and the team will look to bounce back in their next match.
The next match will take place in Janurary, hosting Martin Luther at 1:30 p.m.
