Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cardinals Ride Second Period to Win Over Saints

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's men's hockey team (9-7-2, 5-3-1) used a big second period to earn a 3-2 home win over the College of St. Scholastica (4-15-1, 1-9-1). The Cardinals struck three times in the middle frame, including a power-play tally, and held on late to secure the victory.

Cole Mickel led the offensive charge with a goal and five shots on net, Paden Hicks chipped in a power-play goal, while Joona Juntunen netted the eventual game-winner.

Both teams traded chances in a scoreless first period, with Saint Mary's generating solid looks from Cooper Smyl and Colin Tushie but unable to break through.

The game opened up in the second period.

Hicks put the Cardinals on the board with a power-play goal, assisted by Kyle Arias and Carter Newpower. St. Scholastica answered to tie the game, but Saint Mary's responded quickly as Mickel restored the lead, and Juntunen followed less than a minute later to make it 3-1 heading into intermission.

The Cardinals continued to control play in the third, creating multiple scoring chances but coming up just short of extending their lead.

St. Scholastica pulled within one on a late power-play goal, but Saint Mary's stayed composed down the stretch and closed out the 3-2 win.

The Cardinals will have a rematch with the Saints, again at home, for a 2:00 p.m. puck drop tomorrow.
