WINONA, Minn. – The Saint Mary's volleyball team (8-9, 0-2) fell in a 3-1 matchup to Gustavus Adolphus (11-4, 4-0) on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals battled the regionally ranked Gusties squad, forcing a fourth set.
The team climbed out of a 6-2 deficit early, with help from Ava Berg and Kali Olson. Errors started to pile up for the Cardinals, and a late burst by the Gusties finished set one 25-19.
In set two, the teams each started with four errors. Kills by Ayla Olson and Brianna Hanneken got the Cardinals back on track, 10-10. The Gusties then went on to take an 18-12 lead before the Cardinals flipped the switch, going on an 8-0 run, aided by tough serving from Kali Olson. They would split the game, 1-1, taking set two 25-22.
A slow start burned the Cardinals as they quickly found themselves in a 13-4 hole. It was all Gusties taking set three, 25-13.
The Cardinals could not rally back after multiple 5-0 runs by the Gusties slowed any momentum. The Cardinals dropped the final set of the weekend, 25-16.

The Cardinals will travel to take on UW-Stout on Wednesday, Oct. 7, for a 7:00 p.m. nonconference thriller.
