WINONA, Minn. — A Senior Day for the ages.
The Saint Mary's women's hockey team (9-12-2, 5-9-2) sent its seniors out in style with a thrilling 4–3 win over St. Olaf (10-12-1, 7-8-1) on home ice. The Cardinals delivered in the biggest moments, scoring twice in the third period to seal the victory and cap off a celebration-filled afternoon.
And front and center in the festivities? Teagan Phillips.
Phillips erupted for her first career hat trick — and what a time to do it. The senior scored once on the power play, dominated the faceoff circle by winning 9-of-13 draws, and delivered the go-ahead goal early in the third period to ignite the crowd.Â
After trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period, the Cardinals responded in the second. Phillips buried a power-play goal off a feed from Maggie Albers to tie things up. St. Olaf answered with a power-play tally of its own, but Phillips wasn't done. She struck again later in the period, assisted by Albers and senior Celia Midtbo, to knot the score at 2-2 heading into the final frame.
The third period belonged to the Cardinals.
Phillips completed the hat trick with a clutch finish to give Saint Mary's a 3-2 edge, sending the bench into a frenzy. Just minutes later, Reese Heitzman added what proved to be the game-winner, pushing the lead to 4-2.Â
St. Olaf pulled within one late, but the Cardinals held firm.
Between the pipes, senior Celeste Rimstad stood tall with 22 saves.
With power-play goals flying on both sides and momentum swinging throughout, the Cardinals made sure Senior Day ended the right way.
The team will be back in action one last time in Winona this regular season on Friday, Feb. 20 for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop against No. 2 Augsburg.Â
