WINONA, Minn. — In the home finale, the Saint Mary's men's basketball team (1-23, 0-15 MIAC) dropped a 90-58 decision to the Hamline Pipers (14-10, 6-9 MIAC) on Wednesday night at David R. Thies Arena. Despite the setback, the Cardinals battled inside, scoring 30 points in the paint and pulling down 36 rebounds.
Reid Klug recorded a double-double to lead the Cardinals with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Wohlers added 10 points and four boards, while John Palmer finished with nine points and three assists. Mitchell Hill chipped in seven points on an efficient 3-of-4 shooting performance.
Saint Mary's came out strong, grabbing an early lead on a jumper from Palmer. Hamline answered quickly, however, and applied steady pressure throughout the opening half. Klug helped keep the Cardinals within reach with a jumper at 17:54 and a three-pointer at the 5:43 mark, but the Pipers' hot shooting that was highlighted by several makes from beyond the arc allowed them to build separation.Â
Hamline carried a 44-29 advantage into halftime.
The Cardinals opened the second half with a Palmer layup just 14 seconds in, but Hamline continued to extend its lead during a 46-point second-half effort. Turnovers proved costly for Saint Mary's, as eight giveaways hindered any sustained momentum.Â
Khai Branham knocked down a three-pointer at 11:11 to make it 66-40, and Isaiah Ronning added a late triple with 40 seconds remaining, but the deficit proved too large to overcome as Hamline secured the 90-58 win.
The team will play its final game of the season on the road at No. 12 Gustavus Adolphus for a 3:00 p.m. matchup.Â
