Three Cardinals Earn MIAC Weekly Honors for the First Time this Year

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for basketball, hockey, baseball, softball, and tennis on Monday. Student-athletes from Bethel, Carleton, Concordia, Gustavus, Saint Benedict, Saint John's, Saint Mary's, St. Olaf, and St. Scholastica claimed the Conference's weekly honors.

We have our first week where three Saint Mary's student-athletes made their mark in the weekly conference honors system!


MIAC Women's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week

Ayla Olson

Saint Mary's University

New York Mills, Minn. / New York Mills

Ayla Olson averaged 28.5 points for the Cardinals in a pair of matchups against playoff-bound teams last week. Olson led all scorers with 25 points against Hamline on 2/18 before posting a career-high 32 points against Gustavus on 2/21.

MIAC Baseball Player of the Week

Gavan Schulte

Gavan Schulte hit .417 (5-for-12) with two runs batted in, two extra-base hits, two walks, and a pair of runs scored in the Cardinals' three-game series with Luther over the weekend. After reaching base twice in the season-opener on 2/20, the Cardinals' lead-off hitter went a combined 5-for-9 at the plate in the next two games against the Norse, collecting a double and a stolen base in an 11-8 win on 2/21, and driving home a run on a triple in a 6-5 win on 2/22. Schulte also added four catches and six putouts from the outfield in the series.

MIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week 

Kenzie Gatz

Kenzie Gatz tallied 14 strikeouts and two hits allowed in 7.0 innings of work to help the Cardinals defeat UW-La Crosse and Minnesota Morris over the weekend. Gatz allowed one hit in each game and recorded a career-high ten Ks while facing 15 batters in the team's victory over the Cougars on 2/22.
