WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's men's tennis team (4-9, 0-5) returned home on Saturday but ran into a tough test, falling 7-0 to No. 16-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (11-5, 5-0) in MIAC action at the Winona Tennis Center.
Gustavus set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The Cardinals' top doubles pairing of Gavin Pratt and Kanyon Hicks battled at No. 1 but fell 6-0, while Michael Johnson and Zak Farley dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 2. Paul Havemeier and Owen Fonder rounded out doubles play with a 6-1 loss at No. 3.
In singles, the Gusties continued their momentum, claiming all six matches in straight sets. Pratt led off at No. 1 singles, falling 6-4, 6-1, while Farley (No. 2) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision. Johnson (No. 3) and Havemeier (No. 4) were both held without a game, and Hicks (No. 5) and Fonder (No. 6) rounded out the lineup with competitive efforts but ultimately came up short.
Saint Mary's will take a brief break before facing their next conference competition against the Johnnies of Saint John's on Sunday, Apr. 12 at the Winona Tennis Center.
