Baseball Secures the Opening Conference Sweep, Extend Win Streak to Seven

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — After the weather pushed the conference opener back a day, the Saint Mary's baseball team didn't miss a beat. The Cardinals (12-6, 2-0 MIAC) powered through for a statement road sweep of Saint John's (9-7, 0-2 MIAC), marking their first sweep of the Johnnies since 2015 and extending their winning streak to seven games.

GAME ONE
SMU 3, SJU 2

The opener of the doubleheader at Becker Park delivered plenty of drama, with the Cardinals edging out a 3–2 win in a tightly contested battle.

Eric Stomberg worked just over four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out three. Despite issuing five walks, he limited the damage and induced a key double play to keep the Johnnies in check. Andrew Milner picked up the win in relief, his third of the season, while Brady Patten shut the door in the seventh, earning his third save.

At the plate, Alex Hanneman led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Sam Knickerbocker added a hit, a run scored, and two walks. Daniel Sherman crossed the plate twice, reaching via a hit and a walk.

The deciding moment came in the seventh. Sherman opened the inning with a single and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch after the Cardinals loaded the bases and provided the go-ahead run.

Saint John's threatened late with the bases loaded, but the Cardinals held firm to seal the win.

Saint Mary's had earlier tied the game in the third, with Hanneman driving in Sherman, and briefly took the lead in the sixth on an RBI single from Stephen Golden before the Johnnies answered. Defensive highlights, including a double play and a caught stealing, helped keep the Cardinals in control.

GAME TWO
SMU 4, SJU 1

The Cardinals completed the sweep behind another strong showing, this time fueled by dominant pitching and some timely hitting.

Gavin Schulte paced the offense with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Ryan Csida delivered a big day with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Josh Costello chipped in with a hit, a run, and a stolen base.

On the mound, Kasey Carlson turned in a solid start, allowing just one earned run over six innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Connor Tulley followed with two innings of relief, and Mason Windschitl closed it out with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to secure the save.

After trailing early, the Cardinals grabbed control in the fourth inning when Schulte's double to right-center drove in two runs. They added insurance in the eighth, as Ryan Csida launched a two-run homer to left-center following a Golden single and a sacrifice bunt.

Saint John's lone run came in the third, but the Cardinals' defense quickly shut down any momentum, highlighted by a clutch double play.

Saint Mary's now returns home for the first time this season, hosting UW-Eau Claire in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 1, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
