Auburndale, FL – It has been quite a busy week so far down in Florida for the Saint Mary's baseball team (5-3). Coming off a loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and an off day on Wednesday, the Cardinals looked to put another tally in the win column against Concordia University Chicago (2-6).
SMU 9, CUC 3
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, plating four runs in the second inning highlighted by Josh Costello's two-RBI single and Joe Anderson's two-RBI double. They added two more in the third on Dom Najacht's two-RBI double, building a commanding 6-0 advantage after three innings.
Concordia Chicago got on the board in the fifth with a solo home run from Cam Buckley. Saint Mary's responded with an unearned run in the fifth, a RBI double from Gavan Schulte in the sixth, and a RBI groundout from Daniel Sherman in the seventh to add three more runs.
The Cougars added a pair in the ninth on Buckley's RBI single and some late miscues, but it was too little too late.
On the mound, Kasey Carlson earned the win, improving to 2-0, with a solid six innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out six and walking one.
Connor Olson closed out the final three frames, surrendering two runs on four hits.
The Cardinals are set to face Illinois College in a doubleheader tomorrow, March 6, with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m.
